It's clear to see from a playing perspective where the main problems are. The defence firstly they are not solid enough but what's more worrying for the style of football Emery wants to play they simply are not good enough on the ball they can't pass the ball into midfield with any sort of tempo it's all far too slow. Given the defenders we have I find it so strange that Torreira didn't start today he's the one player who doesn't mind to come deep get the ball off the defenders turn and play positive balls into the final third.
Secondly the investment it was quite clever in way what Emery said about there being no money he is immediately putting the pressure back on the money men after the new finance director hanged him out to dry earlier in the season saying we absolutely have to get champions league now. Having goals is fine at least it shows some ambition but if you don't give the manager the resources what do you expect he's not going to turn water into wine.

Investment is required in defence, Mf and out wide.
Torreir requires a proper physical commanding CM next to him. Not Xhaka and not Guendouzi

Personally I very much doubt he’ll go to Arsenal as he seems the type to respect he’s clubs but I’d be throwing Ozil money at him if I was you.

Defence is not the first issue to be addressed. Midfield is. You watch our midfield and you will see players drifting around and allowing attacks to go past them, straight at the defence who are not being protected. Compare that to the top teams and the midfield is a wall in front of the defence who mop up behind them. We need to address midfield before we spend on defence. We can bring in world class defenders but they will still get broken down without more protection from midfield.
