I need your advice

Can anyone help with a bit of a dilemma I am facing?

I'm thinking of going traveling. I asked my family what I should do a while ago and they had a split opinion.

Should I stay at home or go travelling?

Many people said that I'd have a lovely time, experience new things and meet new people. It’d be the making of me, they said. I’m perfectly capable of surviving on my own and I’d probably develop better relationships with new people than I have with the people at home. I’d learn new skills and probably earn more money because of it.

Some people think I should stay where I am – have a decent job and things are going okay. Could be better and some things about my home town annoy me, but on the whole it’s what I know and am perfectly happy, so going travelling might ruin that.

In the end, we had a family vote around the dinner table and it was decided I would go travelling. Out of seven of us, four thought it was a good idea - my Mum actually said I should go travelling, which surprised me.

So I started planning my journey. I’m not exactly flush with money, so I started looking for a cheap way to achieve what I wanted.

I was going to start off backpacking through Syria and then head through Iraq and Iran using a moped, before arriving in Afghanistan to spend six months. They’ve always sounded quite interesting places, although I must admit that when I started researching them, I realised the full extent of what was happening there. Two war zones! Made me a bit more nervous than I was, but I’d said I was going so I had to stick to my guns. Didn’t want to embarrass myself, did I?

I carried on, packed up my things and now a little while later, here I am at the airport.

My Mum has just arrived and is pleading with me not to go. She says it’s a terrible idea and is blaming me because I didn’t tell her the details about where I’d be travelling to if I go. She says she’d never have voted for it if she knew.

I must admit, having researched it, it does seem like a pretty terrible trip to go on.

Shall I still go, or shall I pull out? I suppose I could ask my family again?

Need your advice – but you’ll have to be quick because if I’m going to leave then I need to get on with it soon.

Thanks in advance.

Yours Truly

B.R. Exit.

So true.

At any major event now, people are more interested in capturing videos and photos to show people they were there, then actually just enjoying it themselves.

Once worked with a born again Christian. Nothing wrong with that. But he wanted money from me to help pay for his flights to Africa do he could dig wells. The trip was costing thousands to fly him over etc. I had issues with it as it was mostly self indulgence as he had probably never held a shovel or driven a JCB. I'm sure the money would have been better spent delegating it to someone already there who has experience digging wells. Rant over.

I was stood at the Afghan border literally 6 months ago, alas didn't have a visa so couldn't enter but otherwise I absolutely would have done.

Each to their own.

What part of visiting the country would particularly be of interest?

Does the fact that it's a warzone concern you?

It is all about the culture in whatever country you visit but also curiosity when it comes to visiting random countries few people go to. I spent time in all five 'Stans' last summer and loved it and have a far better perspective on the region than i would have done otherwise.

Some folk love a beach in Spain or somewhere similar but personally i would rather be dead than ever go to a feckin busy beach populated by transplant brits or some feckin all inclusive resort somewhere, i just don't see the point.

I'm somewhere in between!

I love a relaxing sunshine holiday but only ever stay in a villa because I hate holidaymakers like the British!

Also love visiting new places and particularly enjoy trying different cuisine.

But visiting a warzone is definitely too extreme for me, even though I'm sure lots of people have good things to say about it.

I think the term 'warzone' is a little bit to vague to be honest, a lot of warzones are pretty regional in reality and not nationwide.

That said i do appreciate that in certain countries westerners are actively sought out and the danger level is increased.

Sadly when i was in Tajikistan last year they had a terrorist attack, the one where the car plowed into the cyclists and got out and stabbed them killing four westerners, that was less than 60 miles from where i was that day and it turned out they had been cruising about actively seeking westerners so that certainly made me think. Thing is though, that was the first such attack in Tajikistan for years and the threat level was only set at 1 which at the time i imagine was lower than some European cities.

Interesting.

Scary in one sense, but then somebody would probably say that you're more in danger in some parts of London than you are certain parts of Afghanistan at the moment.
