Look at the progress we have made as a club in the last ten years: hugely improved the standard of the squad, consistent Top4 finishes, consistent coaching, seemingly good relationship between coach and board, new stadium, some great football, new stadium etc
Under Jol, Redknapp, AVB we were often one or two players away from a Top4 (which was the aim at that point), an example that I really frustrated me was when Jol wanted Martin Petrovfor our left wing as we had Lennon on the right, Berba and Keane up front and we played 442. IMO, had we got a left sided pacey winger in that team, it could’ve made ‘the next step’.
The other example was under Redknapp when we were flying but needed to invest in a striker in Jan but we didn’t and consequently fell away.
My point really isn’t about Spurs missing opportunities to take the next step because we’re all well aware this will probably always be the case (probe me wrong in the next few days Daniel).
It’s more the reasons why:
When we were trying to get in to The Europa under Jol, we were always told that better players wanted European football. Once we were Europa regulars we were told players ‘want CL football’. Now we’ve been in CL, what’s the excuse? Why can’t we get players to take us up a gear from Hebrew we are now? We have CL. I suspect that it literally all comes down to money and that the previous excuses were just code for this.
I see that reports are we’re offering £20mil (paper talk I know) for Rabiot. There is no way he’s going anywhere for that, he’s 23!
The only way we can improve is to be honest about the quality of our squad and start to pay the going rate. I don’t think either will happen unfortunately but I’m always eternally hopeful that Spurs will prove me wrong.
Is it all down to money these days?
Look at Everton - doesn’t necessarily bring success
The next step?

Imo Spurs need to sell Kane and reinvest. As liverpool have done with Coutinho money
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While I think this is a wum comment it might come to doing this although with someone like Eriksen as Kane isn’t going anywhere.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is it a wum comment? Its prob the only route spurs or pool can go. We done amazingly from selling courinho
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok I take that back.
It does seem to be able to bring some in we need to sell someone for big money first

Sandy the holy grail is absolutely winning something, which looks beyond Spurs this season again
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I used to think that mate, but modern football Top Four over the domestic cups is king. If the domestic cups were that important, why would clubs not put out absolutely full strength teams from the 3rd round, like they do in the Prem.
United are busting everything they have to finish top four. League Cup or FA Cup won't mean anything if they don't finish top four and get CL.
Spurs need to go into the new stadium with CL football, if they can pick up a trophy as a bonus then good. But bottom line is CL next season is the number one priority. Sad, but that is how the modern game has gone now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I begrudgingly came to that decision several seasons ago Sandy. Anything that gets us into the cl is more important than something that doesn't. That said after years of watching enviously as Arsenal and Chelsea locked horns with Real, Barca and Juve its great to be getting our turn.
Don't get me wrong I'd love to win a domestic trophy but not at the expense of a top 4 place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
even thats not guaranteed this season, going to be tough
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No of course it is not guaranteed, but I would sooner be in Spurs position than United`s, they have won game after game, yet still sit sixth, seven points off Spurs with a far inferior goal difference. They would even as it stands need Spurs to lose three just to catch up, and Spurs in the main very rarely lose to any team outside the top half a dozen or so.
If with all the injuries the next few Prem games should see Spurs hopefully strengthen their top three spot.

We just go around in circles under Enic, we get to the point where we are 2 or 3 top class players away from having a proper chance and they fail to make the appropriate investment to take us the final step.
Understandably money is tight with a new stadium, but hopefully once we move in Enic will start the `end game` and show some real ambition. If they don`t, then they should sell up to somebody who will.
I couldnt face another 5 - 10 years of being nearly men.

Top 4 won't be easy and it never will be with 6 teams chasing 4 places but I fancy us to finish 4th at the worst.

The thing is Spurs have the points in the bag, and enough reasonably easy games to easily Spurs reach top four. I don`t have any worries on that score. Arsenal are not consistent enough, United have had a decent run, but they any setback of any kind will probably see them slip further behind. Chelsea could get bogged down with cup competitions. Spurs other than three biggies away from home, have a pretty kind fixure list to cement their position.

agree entirely, my concern is we win nothing again this season and going to be difficult to retain top players and manager, Eriksen looks like hes ready to leave now doesnt appear motivated at all

Missed the trick selling Eriksen for big bucks surely? If he has 1 year left. We'd need to get £100m+ then we can sign a CM and playmaker for around that, but I don't trust spurs to make the right signings. We'd also need 2 more full backs and that's before anyone else leaves.
