Do the board trust Emery?

With the injury crisis we have suffered throughout what feels like the entire season, even Wenger would have been in the transfer market seeking out reinforcements but at the very best I can see us signing Denis Suarez on loan - not exactly a transfer to be excited about.

I wonder how much this board trusts Emery and how far they are willing to go to really back him. I mean, I can kind of understand why - even during our 22 match unbeaten run I was one of the few not to get carried away because in over half of those matches our performances were very poor, and they show no sign today of getting any better. Get our best XI on the pitch and you get performances like we have had against the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester and Fulham (A), but when key players are missing, we look as bad or even worse than Wenger’s Arsenal. Do the board really want to back a manager who is not pulling up any trees? Especially when he plays a specific style of football and will be recruiting players to fit that style? If it doesn’t work out then we’ve got another rebuilding job on our hands and unless we want to change our style of play again, a limited pool of replacement managers to chose from.

I like Emery and want him to do well. Despite the mind numbing performances we’ve had to endure this season, I really don’t think enough people understand the magnitude of the damage Wenger and Gazidis have caused to this club with their player recruitment and wage structures (or lack of when it comes to Ozil). But I’m not so sure he’s the man to dig us out of this hole. And really I’m not sure if there is someone who can dig us out of this hole any time soon, especially with what seems like a power struggle in the background with all the higher ups battling for supremacy in Wenger’s absence.

I would compare our current situation to Liverpool’s when they spent the best part of a decade slugging it out in mid table. The only difference is that Liverpool’s owners seem to view them as their biggest project and investment while Stan views us as a cash cow. All Stan’s clubs in America are flying while we continue to sink. Our only hope of success is fluking the Europa this season and somehow building on it to maintain a top 4 position in future seasons, but with the investment and quality being made into teams around us and even below us, whilst we take dodgy loan signings to deadline day, I don’t really give ourselves much hope.

Perisic is 29 years old.

Thanks for that.

He has a point though. Don't get me wrong, in short term, he'd be a great signing. But I doubt someone who will be 30 in 2 weeks is planning for the future and if it doesn't work out, we will be stuck with an aged winger with no resale value

Happy with short term signings. Despite our flaws we're only 3 points off 4th and have the opportunity to take points off United/Spurs with City being our only other game vs the top 6. Our fixture list, imo, is favourable with all of our top 4 rivals having more fixtures against themselves.

United have to play Liverpool, City, Chelsea and us in a race they're already behind.

Chelsea have to play City, Tottenham, Liverpool & United.

Spurs play City, Liverpool, Chelsea & us.

The board needs to back Emery and should be looking at the perfect opportunity to push us towards CL qualification. We won't do it without reinforcements.

I'd rather go for Malcolm. At least he has age on his side

For a loan signing we need someone who makes an instant impact, 29 year old is better than a youngster with potential

True and as I said, if it is a short term fix (basically no option to buy), then I'd really happy with it. I rate Perisic highly and I thouhgt he was one of the star of the WC. However, buying a 30 YO man on high salary, I'm not sure it shows we learned from our previous mistake.

Option to buy is good.

It depends. The option Barca wanted to include in Suarez deal was mandatory which we declined. I guess if Inter do the same, then I'd assume we will also pass.

Then its not an 'option'. What Barca wanted was a mandatory buy clause. With an option it obviously encourages Peresic to perform. If he doesn't he will have to go back to a club he wants to get out of.
