Ole has a vision for the club

"I've got a picture of what this Manchester United team should look in a couple of years and I put my views to Ed [Woodward, executive vice-chairman] and the club.

"I've supported and followed United for many, many years and I've always had a clear view on how I thought the team would be, and we're not too far away from when I came.

"Every day I feel that I do help the club by putting my stamp on it, but decisions sometimes of players' futures are not just down to me.

"It's the players. Do they want to stay? Do they want to move on?

"But we have a vision and picture of how we want to look in a few years, so we have to think long-term, but also short-term."

"You take one step at a time and that's one of the goals we've set [top four]," said Solskjaer. "If we do so, we want to stay there and improve on that.

"It's been fantastic, the last two months, but consistency now is the key word. We need to keep on improving, keep on winning games, but in a better way than the Leicester one, where we held on.

"It was good enough, but we shouldn't be happy with just good enough, we want to improve in games like this. Fulham is a character revealer."

Asked if United can challenge for the title next season, Solskjaer said: "I hope so, that they believe they can do that because you cannot out-perform your ego.

"If you want to be a champion and win, it's how you prepare for every single game. We demand that we focus on every single day in training every single game, preparing as best you can."

Unbelievable, Jeff

I know Rhodri’s getting a wedge but I’m a bit surprised he’s gone in for something like this tbh, but I suppose he’s getting in on the joke and owning what happened so fair play.

I’d love to see Giggs reaction to that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Giggsy has already set the bar quite high when it comes to taking the p*ss out of Rhodri tbf...

I know! How's things? Can't recall if you like rugby or not but what do you think about our chances in Rome tomorrow? I fancy us to get 40 points at least.

Not much into rugby but will be watching. See us raking up a high score.
On a side note, got a ticket to see Wales v Slovakia in qualifiers. Ashamed to say it will be my first international but looking forward to it.

Fair enough. Much prefer football but also like rugby. Although it seems to some you have to choose! Good stuff on the Wales game. I've been to a few but I know some from my home town who have been home and away for years and seen some real dark days too. The win v Slovakia in Bordeaux was a big pay off for them in 2016 not to mention the rest of the tournament. Hope you bring us luck!

United are also prepared to wait to fill the role (DoF) until after appointing their next permanent manager, which would ordinarily be a major part of a director of football’s remit.

Theoretically, that will avoid the rancour of last summer when Mourinho believed he has been vetoed by the board after failing to secure a top-class centre-back considered crucial to United’s title chances.

Others would tell a different story. Sources claim the former manager switched his defensive targets midway through the transfer window after scouts had drawn up a dossier viable options. Mourinho suddenly wanted United to pursue deals for Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina.

Woodward was prepared to pay £100m for Real Madrid's Rafael Varane and is continuing to pursue Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, who was on that original dossier of defenders.

Add in Mourinho’s willingness to show the door to Anthony Martial and bring in the ageing Ivan Perisic or Willian – the need for longer-term planning from above is clear.

If true, further evidence that Ed is at least as interested in his own ideas about which players we should be bringing in as he is in his managers'.

That's still Young.

It does seem like Ed has his own ideas which has undermined Jose, but it was Jose who wanted to get rid of Martial and get in Perisic, and then Willian. The former of which we did try to side but didn't think he was worth the amount Inter were asking. The latter had a bid rejected from Barca for £60m.
