Shouldn’t The Spursy Tag now be Binned?

It’s bad enough opposition fans constantly calling us bottlers, with absolutely no justification. But it’s equally annoying when I see our own fans using the Spursy tag and claiming that the players are still bottlers.

I’ve seen a few comments this morning stating that we will lose to Burnley because “it’s what we do" and “we will be Spursy again".

Gosh, I understand the reluctance to get carried away with our PL results and some fans always fearing the worst, but come on, let’s give the team some credit. If we lose a game it’s not because we’re bottlers or Spursy, it’s because we can’t win EVERY game.

Our record in the PL this season so far has been nothing short of outstanding. We’ve coped with significant injuries, playing at Wembley, not signing any players and yet we’re still 3rd on the back of four consecutive league victories.

Isn’t it time to stop fuelling the Spursy myth amongst ourselves and recognise that we are doing extremely well and are significantly punching above our weight?

It's a ridiculous term that's misused time and time again. Essentially, we get called it for over-achieving but ultimately falling short of the grand prize.

The true bottlers are teams like Chelsea, United and Arsenal, who are miles of the pace in the Prem, despite spending absolute fortunes on players and wages. The way United are being bigged up is laughable, still forgetting they are a countrymile behind Spurs, and a chasm off the top.

What chasms are wider than a country mile?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It depends if he’s purely referring to width, or length as well. I’m not sure when something begins/ends to be classified as a chasm, but there are plenty which are longer than a country mile.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
country miles can be really wide though.

Not sure that writing this after wins Vs Newcastle, Watford & Leicester is the best timing.... They were games we should have won. Injuries are just an excuse. If our Squad is not deep enough then Levy & poch deserve stick but every team has bad luck.... ours is self made.

If we get thumped by 4 or 5 away at City & Liverpool and fail to beat Chelsea & Arsenal then nothing will have really changed.

We are going well in whats been a tough season but we gotta stop making excuses otherwise we'll never progress.

Rival fans can say what they want... who gives a fack. The only thing that will shut them up is winning something
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My point was Spurs fans are calling the team Spursy

As for the timing of my article, it really has nothing to do with the last 4 results. We have been in the PL top 3 for the last 3 seasons and I think the club deserves some respect for that. At the very least from its own fans
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends if you actually wanna win something. That's what Sport is all about. Some fans on here are like women.... So Desperate for attention that they'll overhype the smallest achievement..... We as fans & especially our players need to shut our mouths until a trophy is in the bag (Top 4 not a trophy).... You want credit..... Go earn it. If the squad isn't good/ big enough that we run outta steam or run Kane into the ground every year then get on Levy's ar5e to go and do something about it. Too many guys on here are like sheep.... Full of excuses and willing to settle for that BS that "its better than it used to be"..... Total garbage. Some of us want more from the club. Beating also rans in the league, blowing off cups and losing the big games that matter isn't good enough..... Its how complacency sets in.

Lets go beat Liverpool or City away... then take a bow
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, it's clear that we have different view. So let's agree to disagree.

I am enjoying the progress that Spurs have made over the years and I find it incredible that despite all the adversity that the team has had to deal with this season that we're still 3rd with an outside chance of winning the title.

You (and others) seem to think that if we don't win the PL or CL or a cup, that we're bottlers. That also is incredible.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are all enjoying it. We have done well this year all things considered BUT we have done as many things wrong as we have done right. We have the WC winning GK and Captain, the best 2 CBs of the last 5 years, one of the best young attacking MFs in the country, one of the best No 10s in World football, probably the best player to ever come out of Asia and arguably one of the best 2 or 3 CFs in the world..... Lets not kid ourselves.. we're not some bunch part timers. Getting Top 4 is fine but what is it really doing for us ?? Its not like we are close to winning the CL. The money that comes from it goes back into the stadium (not the team... Understandable), CL football is not helping us attract new players (quite the opposite) and its not enough to keep the likes of Toby & Eriksen and make them sign new contracts...... As much as I want it to be romantic and say it's all about the glory..... Football today is about spending money and winning..... Spurs don't do enough of either.... Call it what ever you want. As Ricky Bobby said..... "if you aint First, You're last"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You wrote an excellent article last week (which I commended) about applauding the prudency of our club and issuing a warning that we should not end up like Arsenal. These latest comments from you seem to now ignore all of that!!

Oh, Newcastle...the team that beat City

and Leicester, the team that drew at Anfield

Surely the Spursy thing would be exactly us losing games to them. Surely winning in adversity and also when not playing well is the opposite of Spursy. Surely Spursy would be having the opportunity to close the gap on the leaders vs 'lesser' opposition and failing to do so.

Ask me, the timing is bob-on.

Injuries "Just an Excuse" When City had their woblle around Christmas it coincided with them missing several key players at once - Aguero, Fernandinho, Silva etc.

Even the biggest squads cannot sustain multiple key injuries and still perform.

"If we get thumped by 4 or 5 away at City & Liverpool and fail to beat Chelsea & Arsenal then nothing will have really changed."

You are so negative it's almost as if you want things like this to happen. That's how it comes across.

Most are sat here thinking we're doing ok and it's just fine margins (beating LFC at home) away from being top of the league, hopeful that in a season here we have been handicapped by Wembley and injuries we still come out strong......youre sat there doom-mongering about how bad things will be if we fail to win vs the 2 best teams in the league and our 2 biggest derbies.

As canyons can be described as chasms here are a few Barry.

Well for a start, the Grand Canyon is up to 18 country miles wide, more than a country mile deep and 277 country miles long.

Copper Canyon in Mexico is over a country mile deep.

Cotahuasi Canyon & Colca Canyon in Peru are both over 2 country miles deep.

Fish River Canyon in Namibia is over 17 country miles wide.

Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal is over 4 country miles deep.

Capertee Valley in Australia is wider & longer than the Grand Canyon.

Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet is nearly 4 country miles deep.
