Young signs....

...one year extension.

We’re not going to get rid of all the players we dislike in one summer transfer window imo. I don’t mind him staying so as long as he’s back up for Shaw and we buy a new right back.

The stats themselves though don't show what exactly the assist was or the quality of it so I wouldn't rely on them too much anyway.

That sentence would be a bit too much for him to process.

Shaw's output is just fine, if you watch the way we play and the space he creates with his runs for Martial to move inside, where our goals are more typically created.

Only four fullbacks in the league have made more passes that Shaw this season, but he's nowhere near the top of the list for number of crosses attempted, which tells me that his remit and our style of play isn't necessarily about him whipping the ball in. Fullbacks can provide effective width without whipping the ball in every chance they get.

Shaw has proven this season that he can become one of the best fullbacks in the league. Absolutely no need to get rid of him. I don't even entertain the conversation about Young, because it's obvious that he's not our long term solution - and the one year extension suggests as much.

I don't think anyone's suggesting we get rid of Shaw.

He probably is one of the best full-backs in the league defensively and he does reasonably well when it comes to carrying the ball forward and offering an option on the overlap but his output/end product which is what scholay was referring to earlier about Young, could be better. I don't think there's any disputing this and I like Shaw.

The same can be said for Young and the other side.

Yes full-backs can provide effective width without whipping cross after cross in but they still need to offer quality with their end product (that's where our full-backs could improve), especially when we're up against deep packed defences where the space you get out wide can make the difference.

Evra was excellent at carrying the ball forward for us and getting into good positions in the final third but his delivery was woeful, more so in his latter years.

Smart business.

Experienced, hardworking professional who is versatile dependable, and homegrown.

Good to have on the training ground and in the dressing room around the kids.

2018/19

Shaw 1 goal 3 assists

Young 1 goal 9 assists

Young > Shaw.

Shaw is decent enough for a top 6 side, but not for a team that wants to challenge for the title/champions league. Lets face it, Utd could do better.

Yes because assists is the only barometer for a full back.

Who are all these brilliant full backs with high number of assists?

Think young fully deserved it. Been excellent for 2/3 years. Always happy when he plays on the right and shaw on the left

Young is the best crosser of all our defensive players. He's not great but he's consistently better than any of our other options.

That’s unfounded rubbish.
