Squad selection

Are we that sure that any other manager would be much different in the squad selections and subsitutions?

I know that most of us want changes (including me), but to me its more than likely that under most managers our team selection and substitutions would be the same. Maybe a little bit of tinkering with positioning, but most of the first team would be guaranteed starting positions, players rotated and the same players on the bench. With Willian or Pedro on the RW, Alonso at LB, Kovacic and Barkley being rotated.

Might be a case of me getting used to stubborn managers, though I do think the reluctance to change has to run deep within the club.

Is it pressure on the managers to get results which means they are cautious in turning to youth players?

Does it come from an inner circle environment in the dressing room, where managers choose certain players to avoid conflict with the squad?

Or are we incorrect in assuming as fans that the likes of Emerson for example, are any better than Alonso?

Good article, and frankly probably squad selection wouldnt change much. I do think RLC offers more than kovacic and barkley though, and kante and jorginho should swap for a game to see if that would work (we know kante is world class being a bit more defensive, jorginho would be an unknown quantity higher up the pitch). Alonso is still better than Emerson IMO.

I am more worried about the direction of the club overall than squad selection. I was worried as soon as we started buying the drinkwaters, zappa costas and girouds of the world rather than what we were used to. I'm even more worried now with hazard and CHO seemingly leaving and leaving us with some aging players soon needing to be replaced (willian, pedro, Luiz, strikers). We have no leaders whatsoever in our team.

I was thinking this - how so often we as fans think something completely different to the manager, where even something that the vast majority of fans think should happen, the manager doesn’t agree with. Perhaps we are not used to manager styles. Sarri has been in the game for 18 years and perhaps in his experience his best way to get a team back in form is to stick with the players he knows best, instead of tinkering.

For me, he has under-utilised the squad, however. I’m not sure how anyone could be against Emerson being given more of a chance. At the very least he provides something different to Alonso. He is young and has potential. He is no worse defensively and better going forward.

Yeah its strange how almost every year I feel as if the manager has not fully utilised the squad. It certainly gets a bit weirder when our form eventually drops and no changes are happening.

I can only presume its either because recent years we have just experienced a trend of inflexible managers. Or it could be because the dressing room has a tight inner circle, with players not getting games on the outside.
