On this day

On this day in 1941, the Luftwaffe bombed Old Trafford which prevented Manchester United from playing a league home game until 1949 at Old Trafford.

Local neighbours and all round good guys Manchester City provided an interim home for the reds at Maine Road.

I suppose the Luftwaffe didn't consider Maine Road a point of interest

Assumed there was little point destroying a seemingly abandoned buidling....

Haha to both comments

Far from graciously allowing their neighbours to use Maine Road in the spirit of pulling together in adversity, city of course charged United rent and most of the gate receipts, making finding the money to rebuild all the more difficult.

This has come up before and my favourite comment was that the Luftwaffe passed over Maine Road because they thought they'd already bombed it.

Pretty sure we set records for attendance back then 🧐 anyway I think most people supported both Manchester clubs. I know my grandad would go to both sides home games in the 30s 40s and 50s before settling on City

It's true. Granted it was probably Bert Trautman who did the deed.
Joking of course, it was a nice gesture, there wasn't the hostility then. Real Madrid were exceptionally kind after Munich.
Well done City and thanks.

Don't be silky Bert was a paratrooper. Everyone knows it was Uwe Rosler's grandad.

That’s not right. You struggled to rebuild it as you were mortgaged up to the hilt before the war and it took a while for the war commission to give United money to rebuild. City made no money at all from renting the ground, only the costs of running it were covered.
