Paul Merson what’s his agenda?

He is so negative Castor Troy looks like an angel, he was just quoted saying Arsenal will finish 6th and we have no chance against Rennes.

Here’s his quote, “Adressing host Geoff Shreeves, Merson blasted: “How are they set out to win it?! You think Arsenal set out to win the Premier League - in your wildest dreams. You reckon they aimed that high?

“You’re not telling me their first priority is make sure we get in the top four. And then if we get lucky, and we’re still in it with 10 games to go, we’ve got a chance of winning it.

“I’m not talking about Man United, this year [no], and they weren’t last year. Next year, they ain’t messing about for top four.

“They will want to win the league. They will want the league. And they will make an effort to win the league and they’ll buy players.

“Arsenal won’t."

What is with our former players hating on Arsenal compared to former Spurs, Liverpool, United players who are saying positive things regarding their respective teams.

Paul Merson isn’t an exception I have no idea why Alan Smith, Emanuel Petit, Wrighty etc seems always against our manager or players.

Rio, Giggs, Neville, Owen etc always backs their former clubs despite their opinions towards manager etc. Our former players are just bitter losers imo.

I can sort of see his point, because we do play kamikazi football somwtimes but where is the belief or optimism?
====
The optimism is more over a longer term. We have just replaced a manager who ran the club for over 20 years. We are making a lot of changes behind the scenes.
I don't think it is fair to say Emery should win the league in his first season. Our expectations this season were to see positive change. 12 points up on last season. Only 3 points behind our entire total, with 8 games to go. Double the points won against the other top 6. 3rd highest scorers, 8 more than this stage last season. Conceded less as well. Unbeaten at home since City on day one.

Our away form is still a worry, but with 5 away games to go we already have 3 more points than last season.

4 of our summer signings have been a success. Only Lichsteiner - a short term solution - has flopped.

Lots of optimism to be had, tbf.

And achieving all this with season ending injuries for three very important first team players.
What Unai has done with this group of players is remarkable. I just hope he seals a champion's place (either way) and get the funding he needs to show how talented a trainer he is.

He is spot in. This group of Arsenal players are so far behind winnibg the league, therefore the first aim surely must be top4?

Yeah cause he got rid of him. Wenger gave Adams a chance to reform but no such redemption for Merson. And Dein agreed with it really kills him when he sees all the money players made at the top level in the premier league. Whereas he has to beg for pennies for his rather thick and inarticulate opinion.

That's a bit harsh on Lichtsteiner. For a 3rd choice 35-year old right back, I'd say he's overachieved all expectations.

I don't think the people who brought him in expected him to play in almost half our league games so far.

He's also kept himself amazingly fit. A fact not lost on anyone who's an Arsenal fan. His name is almost always in the match day squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Must say that I expected more from Lich. He may be fit but I just feel his age is being found out now. Doubt whether he'll still be at the club next season. Reckon Suarez is also a doubt to remain if an 18m fee is true. Rarely played so far so unless he kicks on from now until May I can't see that spending a large chunk of our budget on him will happen. Hope he comes good obviously
