Now, I am not really bothered about the England national team. However, I find the constant omission of Smalling from the squad quite baffling.
I understand Southgate doesn't fancy him because he isn't the best at bringing the ball out from the back. Fair enough. However, he calls up Michael Keane and James Tarkowski. From what I have seen, they are probably worse than Smalling with the ball at their feet.
This is coupled with the fact that generally, Smalling is one of the best centre halves England currently has. I'm not saying he is top drawer, but nobody is in that team that has just been announced.

Smalling has done OK at United under LVG and Jose.. But if we want to win the big stuff again we are going to need better CBs. Same goes for Jones and Rojo.

I agree but Smalling is still arguably the last CB we should be letting go of.
It's no surprise he hasn't made the squad again. I don't necessarily agree with Southgate's stance on this but fair play to him for sticking with his decision.
As a defender though, I think Smalling is better than any CB in that squad.
A bit surprised Wan-Bissaka hasn't been included but at this stage starting at U21 level is probably the best thing for him than being 2nd or 3rd choice at senior level.
The midfield is still lacking creativity so Maddison would've been a welcome addition but the same thing applies to him re. the U21s.
Both of them should start in Italy during the summer.

Any CB from City Liverpool Spurs Madrids and many more top table clubs.
Smalling wouldnt get a sniff at any of these clubs.

I’d much prefer we sign someone to compliment Lindelof than Smalling. A truly commanding CB like a Vidic or Chiellini.
