Welbeck new contract

Smart idea or settling for mediocrity?

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11680043/arsenal-will-consider-new-contract-for-danny-welbeck-says-unai-emery

A likeable chap, versatile and always full of energy and work rate, traits Emery clearly admires. However based on what we’ve seen of his career so far, he’s never going to be a prolific, first class striker.

In your opinion is this a smart move, keeping a decent British player in the squad who can play in a few different positions, or is it just based on sentiment and we’d be better off using his wages on a player of higher calibre?

I've always been biased when it comes to Welbeck. I liked him even when he was at United.

Bias aside, one fact still remains. He picked up his injury while on club duty, and the club has a responsibility towards his rehabilitation.

The club has done this before, and I'd expect them to do it again. At the end of the day, these are human beings we're talking about.

"After, his individual thing is to speak with the club [about his future]."

Nowhere does Emery say we are handing him a new contract.

Doesn't he spend more time injured than playing now?

Ridiculously stupid idea... he has never been good enough, will never be good enough and is on high wages

He’s not on ridiculous money at all imo (he wasn’t a free transfer, cost 16m & wasn’t wanted by Man Utd) & how much do you think it’s going to take to replace/improve him? A lot fackin more than a new deal for him is, sunshine 👍🏼

We replace him with Reiss Nelson

I would say that he’s proven himself not to be of the required calibre, time to move him on. If he wasn’t currently our player and was available on a free transfer I’m not sure we’d be happy with handing him a squad space and a decent chunk of our wage budget. I’m sure our scouts can find some better talent

Thought he looked pretty looked pretty decent early in the season before his injury. Don't see any harm in keepinh him, so long as it isn't a LANS situation.

I wouldn't be too disappointed either way. I guess that says a lot. Or not very much.

Being HG may save him.

Keep him. We have a shortage of England internationals and he's delivered big moments while he's been with us. A good 3rd choice striker

Don't get me wrong i like Welbeck and think he's a great squad player.

However you can't ignore the fact that's he's missed almost 3 seasons of football of us - 2 Knee injuries and now a broken ankle.

He was also ready to leave us on a free before he got injured.

Sad to say but u cannot rely on him
