OGS Goals

I watched the youtube clip to all of OGS goals for us the other day and it is clear to see how far our current strikers have to go to reach the standard set here.

Not only is it a good trip down memory lane, but you can see why our attack was so much better.

Firstly onto OGS himself.

There are all types of different goals here. Clinical right and left foot shots, headers, tap ins and goals he made for himself out of nothing. One thing Lukaku, Rashford, Lingard and Martial can learn is how to find space in a crowded penalty area.

The other thing to glean from this nostalgia is the importance of moving the ball quickly. Nearly all of Beckham's crosses were hit with his very first touch of the ball, similar with Neville, Irwin and Giggs.

There was none of this holding onto the ball and indecisiveness that we still see.

In fairness, the game has changed a lot since his days with us. The quality of opposition is much higher, fitness and organisation in particular.

No mate. Ole and the rest were just better than what we have today. Fact.

Stand-out Solskjaer goals for me:

- Lille away, I think. Barely even a half chance, not really running towards goal, and he just rifled it with his left foot, high into the net.

- Chelsea at home. Right-foot curler, just behind the post and bar at the Stratford End.

- Fulham away. Tight angle, didn’t matter. Smashed it through the keeper’s arms.

Off the top of my head.

...............

Much better.

Our two full backs were better. Miles better. Our two CM's were better. Miles better. Our two wide players were better. Miles better.

Good article OP. The fact he was not even first choice tells you everything. This is why people slate Lukaku for a reason. The other day an old chap was saying Rashford is not united quality and got ridiculed..... maybe he was going overboard a bit, but when you watch that video, his point is not far from valid.

Another thing to glean from our attacking play back then was that there was none of this inverted winger $hit.

My gran (and she is dead) could mark Sanchez when he plays on the left as you know he is going to cut inside every single time.

All comments spot on VC. Also that's why I want a top right winger with a right foot this summer, plus another Robbo and RVP would be nice. As if...

Ole's third (?) against Forest when he smacked it in with not much to aim at was a good un.

Easy to forget how good Solskjaer was. Looking back at some of those goals, there are a few in there that our current group simply don’t have the technique or composure to execute.

We need another Cantona and another Scholes immediately.

Also, anyone who watches that and argues that Beckham wouldn’t thrive in the era of inverted wingers is an idiot.

Plus when Becks got injured Ole was a revelation on the right wing.
