McTominay proving me and others wrong

And I couldn't be happier.

I'll be honest. I didn't see what he brought to the team initially when Jose kept giving him games. Didn't seem to excel at anything really that you'd expect a midfielder to be good at. I know it's always risky to judge young players so soon but he didn't stand out whatsoever to me. Didn't think he had what it takes.

However since Ole has come in he's had some really top performances against likes of Liverpool, Wolves, PSG and now Barca. That's real testament to the lad to handle those games.

Hopefully he can continue this form and stay in the team for the rest of the season. Going into next season I'd still like us to greatly improve the midfield, however I'm sure he'd still get plenty of games for us anyway.

Here's a nice couple of posts from a few short months back:

"If McTominay makes it at a top ten PL level club, I’ll eat my proverbial hat. He’ll go the way of someone like McNair. He doesn’t have the raw talent, and that should be pretty evident."

This is evident to anybody who has seen him play. He's incredibly limited and one of those players you know will go down through the leagues once we get rid of him. His main assets are the ability to have a growth spurt and rge ability to follow instructions. There really isn't anything else that stands out in a positive way way for him.

When will people learn about judging young players too soon?

I do enjoy being a smug caaaant though, so carry on as you are and I'll keep saying it

We both can be smug. People need to learn when not to both overrate and underrate youngsters

It always made me laugh when people were quick to slate McT who had shown promise in the first team against adults while making Greenwood out to be the second coming when barely ever playing in the first team based on how he played against kids.

More:

"Please to god not McTominay. He's fecking Sheite. If he plays ahead of Perreira who has been by an absolute mile our best player this pre season then Jose needs sacking on the spot."

"He can only do the simple stuff. Have you watched him closely? He plays for Manchester United and if you can't express yourself with the ball you're not good enough to be at the club. End of."

Fairly sure that was me! I’m delighted to say that one recent evidence, I will be eating my hat. In my defence, I had said elsewhere that he might kick on to be a good squad player and I did call it right on some of our young players much earlier than others, such as McNair.

What McT has shown more of is composure and forward passing on the ball. Prior to the last few weeks we’d seen nothing of it. Fingers crossed he can kick on and it’s not just a purple patch.

I think all of those quotes were true at the time, I called him bland and boring and he was.
Somebody said judge him under a more progressive manager and I shouldn't have ignored that because I was saying the same thing about Martial.

I'm sure every United fan who had bad things to say about him are happy to be proven wrong on things like these.

His next test is to find consistency next season, hopefully he sees out the rest of this one as a starting choice... and Fred.

Actually maybe not all of those quotes lol

Nothing of it for the seniors, but plenty of it in the full season he played for the U23s before stepping up.

There are those who can look distinctly average at junior levels before taking to senior football like the proverbial duck. And vice versa, of course.

The (very commonly ignored) moral of the story is to not rush to judge players as soon as they step up. Some players, like McT under Jose, are restricted by instruction. Some take time to adjust to the physicality, pace, quality and/or pressure around them in their new environments.

And so isn't remotely uncommon for players - CMs and CBs in particular I think - to fail to shine before they hit 23 or 24 years old, yet still go on to become top drawer players.

I'm not arguing that McTominay will turn into a world beater. But I wouldn't argue against the possibility. Because the plain fact - cold, hard fact of the matter - is that nobody knows whether he will or not.

I will be quite happy for Rosso to bring up my quotes on McT as well.

Nothing has really changed my opinion.

I will, quite happily, have him start ahead of Matic now as he is better.
