Wasn't he a racist
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes racially abused and bullied Howard Gayle.

Took his frustrations out on Howard after Emlyn usurped him
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saw these quotes earlier. Pretty disgusting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The club sanctioned the abuse for years, no one gave him any support apart from Souness
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Elaborate anyone.

No idea of the background to this.

Just liked Tommy the footballer

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1988, Smith caused controversy after stating in an interview with the author Dave Hill that Howard Gayle "suffered from a black man's attitude towards the white man. See, everybody thinks whites have an attitude towards blacks. In reality it's blacks who have a problem with the whites... I used to call Howard the 'White N*gger'. Now that is a compliment. It was the only way I could find to describe that I thought he was OK."

Smith then went on to comment to Hill that "I'm not prejudiced but if a c**n moved in next door, I'd move, like most white people would. If my daughter came home with a n*gger, I'd go mad. But I'm only being truthful and normal."

Smith intended to sue Hill, but found he had no grounds to take legal action as Hill had recorded all of Smith's comments on tape during the interview.

Just found that on Wikipedia, probably more stuff about it if you're curious
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Those incredibly racist views are not ‘normal’ in 1988, Tommy

Have to agree I was at uni and living in Brixton then during the summer for building site work, and those views were not acceptable in the Chelsea shed, never mind among players.

Suarez...klanfield.

I was at a Liverpool v Chelsea game in the nineties and in bars afterwards locals were racist to black guys... saw that in the Chelsea potter bar on kings road too then.

Sure Everton are white was a chant until twenty years back.

Just got kicked off the Liverpool thread for mentioning born slippy Stevie G.

Precious and hypocritical Scouse gits.😊

Yes. John Barnes also suffered abuse at Anfield as a Watford and Liverpool player
