"We need players here who are going to be able to take us forward," he said.
Asked about his squad, Solskjaer added: "It's going to be survival of the fittest or survival of the best. That's how ruthless we have to be."
"We played against a Barcelona team that sets the standard in European football," the 46-year-old told a news conference on Friday.
"We're under no illusion it's going to be hard work and there will be some tough decisions made by me, Mick [Phelan, the assistant manager] and the club.
"You want to see players step up and say now: 'I want to be part of this.' You saw Fred and Scott [McTominay] the other day took the mantle up. That's what we expect from all the players."
Ole also confirmed Valencia will be leaving and Herrera talks are ongoing.

Ole to make changes

Speaking of changes, Barca have made 10 changes to the side United faced last week, only Ter Stegen keeps his place

Isn’t Laird supposed to be a very good full back in our under 23s?
Pacy and right footed if I’m not mistaken?

Bale will likely turn out to be another Sanchez type of signing scenario - both on and off the field.
All the big hype surrounding his arrival and presence will soon be clouded over with his on field inabilities and injuries.
This is something that a club like ours severely needs to stay away from.
It has set us back a few steps while we've lost focus.
We need to sign better abled players who have a longer productivity and who can take us forward.

To be fair to Bale he’s only ever turned us down once
When he went from Saints to Spurs he never actually turned us down and SAF confirmed that in his book.
It’s really only him turning us down in 2013 to go to Real as opposed to joining Moyes at United.
He would absolutely be a risk but let’s not forget it was only 11 months ago he starred in the CL final against Liverpool scoring one of the greatest goals you’ll ever see. (And one hilarious one). We need a right sided player and they are few and far between.

Which also sounds similar to a Chilean that we bought from Arsenal. His form was good the season before that.
And coincidentally they were around similar ages.
Bale's wages would be stupidly high for us. That's not to say that he hasn't earnt it for all that he has achieved. But when you factor in all the risks it involves and at this stage of his career then you should feel very wary about making this offer.
Like i said before, we've made the mistake with Sanchez. We need to spend that money on wages on a better, reliable player - even if it happens to be a crazy big wage.

What we don’t need is to blow most of our budget on overhype like sancho.

I think Sancho will be a good signing whatever the cost but not quite yet. There will be a huge amount of pressure on him to succeed and he literally only just turned 19 two weeks ago. Ideally if we could afford it we’d buy him and Bale and loan Sancho back for a couple of seasons to Dortmund then bring him back when Bale is past it and then bring in a more mature and ‘ready’ Sancho

I have to give to you Robb, you are for signing Bale but were against getting Ronaldo

Could be tricky, it would appear we sacked all our scouts the day saf left, at least that’s how it seems
