The Sopranos Ending/Aftermath

For anyone who hasn’t seen the show, there will be spoilers below.

The most prevalent opinion of the ending of The Sopranos is that Tony died. The shot sequences were showing Tony looking at something, followed by a shot of what he was looking at. The final shot of black was because he was no longer seeing anything.

If this is the case, what are your theories about how the show would have continued to play out? Who’s the boss of the Soprano family? Paulie? Would retributed have been sought against Butchie and New York, considering they gave Tony their word they’d back off? If Tony was killed, was it payback for whacking Phil in front of his family?

Also, anyone looking forward to the prequel movie? It’s got a great cast, including Michael Gandolfini as the young Tony.

I wonder if Puss is wearing a wire in the prequel.

No, it’s set in the late 70’s/early 80’s I think. He didn’t get flipped til about 1996, if you look at the shows timeline, after he got his collar felt for trafficking heroin.

I wasn't actually being serious. Think it's 60's too isn't it?

well the sopranos started in the late 90s...tony was late 30s then...so would have be born ~1960

therefore the prequel must be set in the late 70s/early 80s, if young tony is around 20 in it

When Tony and Bobby were out on the lake (before they had that massive fight back at the cabin) they were talking about what it would be like to be on the end of a "hit" and I think Bobby says something like "everything just cuts to black", that's what happens in the final scene so I've always maintained that Tony is dead.

The ending is amazing though, firstly, the balls to end such an iconic show like that, and also it keeps people talking about it and debating it long after the show has ended. Brilliant from David Chase.

In terms of the NJ branch of the Mafia, I think Paulie keeps things ticking over with regards the businesses, The Bing, the construction work etc but they were quite an old crew and times had changed, AJ wasn't about that life, Christopher had died, Jackie Jr had been taken out, Furio had gone back to Italy. So there's no young blood coming through or a real succession plan.

I'm really looking forward to the film, there hasn't been a good mafia film since, what? Goodfellas?

i think the NJ branch becomes just a crew and under control of one of the 5 NY families...just as Phil Leotardo had envisaged

Ace

You’re right, he Bobby doesn’t say anything about cutting to black, I haven’t watched the scene in years but just found it on YouTube, I don’t know why I had that line in my head

I linked the Members Only guy on first watch, that one was fairly obvious though. There are supposed to be other references to the failed attempts on Tony’s life too, the black guys who walk into the restaurant, the boy scouts, Meadows failed parking attempts and what have you.

Regarding the prequel, it'll be interesting to see which of the confirmed cast members will play which characters.

John Bernthal is pretty much confirmed as Jonny Boy Sopranos.
You'd think Vera Farmiga would be Livia.
Alessandro Nivola is Dickie Moltisanti.
Corey Stoll you'd imagine would be Junior.
I reckon Ray Liotta might be Paulie Walnuts.
Billy Magnussen, Jackie Aprile Snr? Might be a bit old though. Potentially Hesh.
John Magaro could be Silvio.
Rob Colletti has to be Big Pvssy.

Other characters that need to be cast: Ralphie, Richie Aprile, Carmella, Janice, Hesh. Also Johnny Sack and Carmine Lupertazzi.

Actually, Ray Liotta is 64. Maybe he'll play Carmine. Billy Magnussen as Paulie then? Ah, I don't know!
