Wayne Hennessey cleared

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey did not know what a N*zi salute was when he was charged with making the offensive gesture, says a Football Association panel.

My favourite part

“In fact, when cross-examined about this Mr Hennessey displayed a very considerable - one might even say lamentable - degree of ignorance about anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the N*zi regime"

Doesn’t do much for the footballer stereotype

Next time Chelsea send their supporters to Auschwitz to teach them about the horrors of the holocaust perhaps Hennessey can tag along.

Obviously not the FA, even though it's against their rules.

"From the very beginning, he said that he was simply raising his right arm to attract the attention of the waiter taking the photograph whilst at the same time cupping his left hand around his mouth to make his voice carry as he shouted to the photographer to get on with it"

I remember a Liverpool fan being charged for using monkey gestures against Patrice Evra.

He was caught on camera and claimed he was coughing whilst trying (and failing) to put his hands in his coat pockets at the same time.

I think it’s entirely possible Hennessy knows nothing/is ignorant about fascism and nāzis beyond they were the bad guys in WW2. It doesn’t mean he didn’t do the salute on purpose as a joke, just ignorant to any significance behind it. And it is possible it’s just bad timing really, though you’d think the other players around him would be involved in the investigation.

The fact that he's done the Hitler tash with the other hand basically shows he's 100% commited to Nazism.

It couldn't be the common pisstake gesture that almost everyone has done at least once (usually when you're 9 but still). Let's get in a big moral panic about it, as he's obviously 20 seconds away from exterminating Jews.
