Play-Offs - Not Fair?

Someone at work supports Bristol City and he’s been hoping all season that they finish in the play-offs. I’ve followed (‘been informed’ is probably more accurate) of their results because of this and can see that they’re in with a good chance of qualifying.

Do you lot think the play-offs are fair? The reason I ask is because looking at The Championship down to League Two, it’s looking like the club occupying the last play-off place will end up finishing anything from ten to twenty points worse off than the club occupying the first play-off place.

So over a long, hard season of 46 odd games, third place team has clearly proven they’re a better side than sixth / seventh placed team, yet the latter only has to win one tie against the former to be promoted - should they get past the semi-final.

Now I get that the race for the play-offs and the play-offs itself are exciting and bring attention away from the PL, but for me the format isn’t fair.

As unlikely as it may be, could you imagine if the FA / UEFA introduced a play-off for the last Champions League spot? Right now Wolves, Watford, Leicester, Everton and even facking West Ham would be in with a chance of qualifying for CL Football next season at the expense of fourth place. There would be uproar.

Anybody agree or got a counter argument?

Am I right in thinking that the team that wins the Championship playoff final gets a huge amount of money in comparison to the actual winner of the league?

Depends what you mean, really? Prize money is actually distributed equally among all teams, so top gets the same as bottom. There is no prize money for winning the play off.
However, there will be extra income from the play offs through gate receipts and TV money for the play offs.

Yeah, so I believe that the playoff journey for the winner combined with the money to where you finished (3rd-6th) ends up making you the biggest earner compared to 1st or 2nd.

Nothing better than the playoffs at the end of the season.

Yeh I reckon the Prem should be like in Rugby, where the top four play off to see who the real champions are.

18, 19, 20 relegated as is
1, 2, 3 promoted outright

Play off between the team finishing 17th in the PL and 4th in the Championship. Could even make it a mini tournament between 4, 5 and 6 if you want to keep top 6 as a thing.

Unfair in my eyes but its good business and a money spinner which seems to be far more important than fairness in the football world nowadays

17th in the prem would be too strong for 4th in the Championship 99% of the time, no?

There was a time in 1988 where 17th in the top division which was Chelsea played 4th in division 2 which was Middlesbrough.
Chelsea ended up going down for finishing 17th that season.A 2 legged affair with Boro winning the 1st leg 2-0.Chelsea won the return 1-0 but not quite enough.
This was followed by mass rioting . The 17th v 4th system was amended after that to the current system we have now.
