Now before I criticise the guy (again) I'll start by saying he played fairly well today, in the first half at least. Looked like he was really up for it, which makes performances like at Goodison last week where he barely bothered to move pretty bewildering.
But is there any excuse for a professional footballer at any level to be as damn unfit as he is?
I know this is an issue with the entire squad, but after about 30 minutes today his race was run. Stood still, hands on hips, puffing intensely - absolutely fecking ridiculous. I am reasonably confident am fitter than he is from playing 5-a-side every other week.
This is something Ole simply has to get right over pre-season. It's as important as our recruitment imo. It's been a problem for years now that we simply can't maintain intensity over a half of football, nevermind an entire game. One of the most impressive things about this Liverpool side is their ability to just keep going over 90 minutes - and you see how many points it's got them.
Missing out on CL football is disappointing but in reality these guys simply cant handle juggling Europe with a domestic season at the moment. Hopefully we just use the kids and the second string for EL next season up until the latter stages, if indeed we get there.
