Cesar?

Big Billy's funeral today. Truly one of the greats. RIP big man.

My point is a rather trivial one in the circumstances and I wonder if anyone can shed some light on it.

It seems to be accepted wisdom now that his nickname was Cesar rather than Caesar.

The most common take on this in the press over the past few weeks is that he got the name because he drove the same car that Cesar Romero drove as the getaway driver in Ocean's 11. I've read that already in two articles this morning.

I've always been a bit suspicious of that argument....mainly because I can't visualise Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin making their escape in a Ford Anglia.

I haven't seen the movie for a long time but I had a wee dig this morning. A few points -

1 The money got taken away in a garbage truck
2 The gang got away on foot ..I think! There wasn't a getaway driver
3 Cesar Romero's role in the movie was as a reformed gangster who offers to help the mob get their money back. He wasn't a getaway driver.

So..it seems that this is just a myth that has taken root and been repeated by our lazy press.

Any ideas?

He had a Roman nose similar to the busts of some of the Ceasars, that's my theory anyway.

Bell Leckie was on Talksport the day after Billy died and told how Billy who was still a youngster at the tine had went to see Oceans 11 with 2 other players. When they came out the cinema and gone back to the car they were having a bit of a laugh about which character they would each be in the movie and as Billy had the car with him and was driving they joked that he was Cesar the get away driver and the name stuck from there.

Don't know if that is true but seems more plausible than the same car story which is clearly nonsense..

Cesar wasn't the getaway driver mate. That's my pointless point.

Ahh ok mate I never new that but confirms Leckie was on the right radio channel for talking pash and he was adamant that he was right. Personally never seen the movie so wouldn't have had a clue.
