The "Spursy" Tag

I wrote an article a few months ago asking whether the Spursy tag could be put to bed. Unfortunately a string of results and performances immediately after my article was posted meant that I was a little premature in asking the question.

Now, a few months on (and nearly at the end of the season), with a top 4 position all but secured and reaching the CL final against all the odds, I think it's appropriate to ask the question again.

I personally think that the term should now be made redundant.

How can a team that did not sign any players in the last two windows, had no home for much of the season and had to cope to injuries/absences of key players for big games and yet finish in the top 4 and reach the CL final be regarded as bottlers?

I think our standing in world football has been enhanced and I doubt any team (or their sets of fans) will regard us as an easy touch anymore, or a team of bottlers.

As Lucas Moura's buried that last minute goal on Wednesday night, I believe he also buried the Spursy tag.

Anyone agree.....now?!

It's generally the Spurs fans who use this tag, in my experience.

Take this weekend - everyone has said that the top four has been decided yet I know Spurs fans who feel it's in the balance!

I still use the word as in context it's quite acceptable imo. If you don't play to your best, or at least approaching it, when under pressure and in must win situations then yeah, that's bottling. Spurs have done this fairly frequently tbf.

Have Spurs lost that tag? Not yet. For example they have made top foue actually a bit of a slog and only the ineptitude of Utd and Arsenal has virtually secured it.

The CL campaign has been quality though and is a big stride towards shedding that rep. Go two or three down against us in the first half of the final though and that moniker will be alive and well.

Don't much care about tags.
But I'm sure Spursey will be bandied about if we lose in Madrid.
Hopefully we will have a full squad for that game, including Vertonghen, but probably Kane will start on the bench, if at all.

So...... what's the betting?
Liverpool are a great squad and they will have Firmino and Salah back for duty, added to the squad thart beat Barcelona.
It should be an interesting match, although I doubt it will live up to the excitement og the Ajax match in Amsterdam.

What's your betting?
Spurs to win?
A draw and penalty kicks?

BTW ...Sandy need not add his two cents worth since he's always" joking" when he's wrong.

The whole bottlers thing has just become a phrase that rivals use to wind up others. The year we came 2nd to Chelsea we won 12 of our last 13 league games (not too shabby) and got called it so its just become a bad joke.

With some clowns its now win or bottle.

As for being Spursy I quite like that as its personal to us and its great when we make a mockery of it.

Bit unfair imo.

Teams will experience downturn in form and that can often happen in the latter part of the season for clubs who haven't invested in their squad.

We do because we invented it but it's been hijacked to a different meaning.

Spursy to me / to us is some ridiculous situation, often outside of our control (at least to a degree) that prevents us from success.

See lasagne, Chelsea winning the CL, that sort of thing.

Now it's used for Spurs not winning...sorry bottling, big games.

Haha maybe but we dont let in four as a rule.

Dreading the game personally. Im a massive bottler fwiw. Was always good in training, sh!t in matches. Great at pool, sh!t on the black. Quality short game in golf, miss three yard puts. All that.

It is a bit unfair but truth is.... we still need to win Trophy.... CL would be a perfect start
