There are no incentives to finishing 3rd or 6th. Even the National League (Division 5) has a better system, so the new system would be...
3rd and 4th get a bye. Leeds and WBA
5th home to 8th. (one leg only) Villa v Bristol City
6th home to 7th. (one leg only) Derby v Boro
3rd home to lowest placed team left (one leg only) Leeds v Bristol City
4th home to other team left (one leg only) WBA v Boro
Final - Leeds v Boro
Winners - Leeds
Same amount of games for the money men, opens up 2 more playoff places, maybe it will lessen some of these games that don't mean anything to some clubs near the end of the season.
Playoffs need revamping!

How about a play off between 3rd in the Championship and 18th in the Prem?

Sounds very good...

I'm a United fan but I hope Leeds come up in the play offs. This is coming from a Manchester United fan as well. All the best, from an MUFC fan.

Thanks Milan, nice to see there are some genuine football fans out there.

Would back the championship team more often than not. I think 3rd should go straight to the final.
5th v 6th winner players 4th, winner of that plays in the final against 3rd. That means the team in 6 would have to beat all 3 sides to up and that would be deserved way to do it.

Playoffs are an injustice if you finish third but they keep the season alive for many teams and fans.
It’s all about money and TV in the end though.

Sounds fair does that.

That’s been my thought for a few seasons now. That rewards 3rd place appropriately.

Wouldn't be having this discussion if we had just sneaked into 6th spot.....
Play offs is not ideal but it keeps the season alive for a bit longer. Remember in the last few seasons we were hopeful of playoffs but fell away after Xmas each time

I agree that playoffs are wrong but we’ve fallen after coming third so am not going to moan if we get through. It does add excitement but not sure a team finishing 6th can be fit for the Prem. Another thing to consider is that without the play offs, we would have had nothing to play for against WBA last week and they would so maybe you could have been pushed to 4th....

I enjoy the Play-Offs, adds a lot of excitement to the league season, although I do agree, you could finish 6th and be 15 points behind the team in 3rd but still potentially go up which maybe isn't fair.
I don't think that's the case so much this season because personally I think any of the 4 sides who go up through the Play-Offs have a better chance of staying in the PL than what Norwich/Sheff United do imo.
I'd definitely say all 4 teams have some PL quality already in their sides and are big enough clubs to attract players who are good enough for the PL. Think Sheff United have too many players suited to the Championship and Norwich I just can't see scoring enough goals, pretty much how they usually end up when they are in the PL.

I enjoy the playoffs adds a bit of tension and excitement to the end of the season and also prolongs the season and helps keep it honest.. ie sides have more to play for for longer in the season.
Personally I think the suggestions that give some advantage to the higher finishing side are probably fairest. For me, 1 legged ties where 5 plays 6, winner plays 4 etc would be the way to go... where higher ranking side gets home advantage.
I’d apply that to the final as well, so team that comes 3rd has 1 game at home to win it... team coming 6th has 3 games away.
