Fred's PL Season Review

38 games have come and gone and it's probably been our best shot at a title race in my lifetime. The difference between Stones clearing it off the line and Sane's shot hitting two posts and going in has been the difference between a remarkable second place and a brilliant title winning season.

Player of the Season

Whilst the obviously candidate would be VVD, I have to give this to Sadio Mane who has stepped up and been absolutely brilliant all season. Sharing the golden boot, scoring some absolutely vital goals at vital times and being a constant menace to 19 other defences in the league makes him my player of the season.

Signing of the Season

Tough one to call, obviously Keita hasn't been quite as good as we expected aside of a few flashes but I have a lot of confidence that he will be the player that we signed. Shaqiri has had a lot of time out of the team but has shone when he has played and put in some vital assists, more recently Newcastle and Barcelona. Fabinho has absolutely transformed our midfield and has become our best player in there but it has to be Allison Becker who alongside VVD has changed us from an unstable leaky defence into the best in the PL, and has been fantastic all season.

Most Improved Player

Has to be Joel Matip for me who alongside VVD has been fantastic in defence this season. I was initially wary of the signing but he has solidified his position as VVD's partner. Another shout for this would be Divock who has been absolutely brilliant to close the season, but hasn't really been present until the last six weeks or so.

Performance of the Season

Liverpool 4 Barcelona 0. Probably the best performance I've seen from us. Scratch this, forgot I was doing a PL review

Liverpool 5 Arsenal 1. Looked a difficult game when Arsenal went ahead but we absolutely hammered them after that.

Goal of the Season

Has to be Daniel Sturridge against Chelsea, what a brilliant goal to steal a point.

Outlook for Next Season

In our last two title challenging seasons (08/09 and 13/14) it always felt like it would be a one off, we would be reliant on a mega star to get us through the season, and it always felt like a bit of a fluke that we were doing so well. We also had (especially in 2014) the thought of one of the mega stars leaving hanging over our heads the entire season.

This season feels very different, there is no real stand out player (like a Suarez / Gerrard / Torres) instead we are just a very well assembled balanced team with good options coming off the bench and more importantly nobody looking at the exit door. A couple further signings in summer with no departures and we really could make that final push.

Before then however, bring on June 1st...

Fekir makes sense, cover for Firmino and can turn creator much like Coutinho used to.

Hard for Liverpool to bring in another CM when the ones that are there continually do the business so i don't see Neves happening.

For full back cover, Tierney isn't going to want Robertson to keep him out of the club and country sides so i don't see him moving unless he's first choice. Arguably the most difficult positions because you need quality that will mostly be cover

Lazy narrative to say that Van Dijk has changed a leaky defence. To me it implies like he's done it all himself. Yes he has improved it but TAA & Robertson have also been newly added to this defence. Since about Jan last season this has been a practically new defence. Alisson and Gomez playing their vital parts as well and we were looking world class at the back earlier this season.

Imagine what can happen once Klopp sorts out our Jan & Feb months.

We need like for like replacements when players are injured. Look to City with Fernandinho and KDB injured but their replacements B Silva and Gundogan are of the same quality.

“The difference between Stones clearing it off the line and Sane's shot hitting two posts and going in has been the difference”

Bored of reading 5hizzle like this. Us winning 14 games on the bounce with an allegedly tougher run is the difference.

I mean, had Sane's shot not gone in, we'd have had 98 points and City 96...

Not him solely has changed the Liverpool defence, but I think he's had the biggest influence out of all of the new defenders imo. Obviously individually, Robertson, TAA, Gomez and Alisson have all been excellent which is why the defence is as good as it is, but anybody who plays alongside Van Djik seems to be so much more composed and reliable.
