Fitness and stamina

Just wanted to point out that it isn't possible to make a massive impact on players' fitness and stamina in the very short period between the players returning from holiday and the season starting, particularly with EL qualifiers appearing late July.

I get the impression that some people think we can expect to see a squad appear on opening day that is ready to run like Liverpool do every week, and that's just not possible.

Part of that is the athletic profile of the squad - we'll never see Lukaku or Matic repeating sprints like Mane or Wijnaldum; or Mata or Shaw operating at peak output for 120 minutes like Salah or Robertson. That sets a natural ceiling for this squad, like it does for every other, and ours is a fairly significant step below several other top PL sides.

The second very large part of if is, of course, baseline fitness and conditioning, which at elite sportsman level it takes months and months and months of sustained conditioning work to build.

Realistically, we'd be talking about both a rebuild of the squad with a good number of new players of a different athletic profile *and* a season's worth of reconditioning if we wanted to be playing every week the kind of sustained, high tempo high press that we saw in Ole's first few games.

In short, don't expect miracles come August.

I can't find (despite searching for a good 15 seconds) running stats for La Liga but observation would suggest that Atletico's ability to punch above their weight is maybe also in correlation to running further than their Big 2 rivals.

Atleti don’t really punch above their weight anymore, to be fair.

Why does it take months and months and months to build up to the fitness levels of Liverpool's team?

It's not like the guys have had a couple years off football. They've been playing professional football for a very long time.
I play at a decent level, and my fitness improves the more I play.

It seems the opposite happened with our team, the more they played, the less fit they became.

Why?
Anybody with any proper knowledge know?
Genuinely interested...

The cardiovascular antamology impacts have been understated for me.

The glutotamine and fluctocpacity in their systems would have spiked when Jose left, giving them a temporary boost of energetistis. But it was always going to wear of, leaving them on empty for the remainder of the season.

Exactly the reply I was looking for.

Cheers mate.
