The play offs

Are they really a fair system.

Some great games have been produced over the years.
However I find it ridiculous that the team in 6th who on average
could finish between 10 -15 points behind 3rd has an
equal shot at the premier league.

I think some kind of advantage should be given to the 3rd place team so they dont have to win.

If 3rd place team draws their match they go through as they finished higher n the league etc.

The points gap should count for something.

Or Promote 2/Relegate 2 automatically
Then 3rd 4th 5th and 18th in the Prem given the
chance to stay up.

Many years ago this was tried
No wembley final.each match was 2 legged.
Middleboro ended up being promoted and Chelsea relegated.
Boro won 2-0 in the 1st leg.Chelsea won 1-0 in the 2nd leg.
Unfortunately riots followed as Chelsea went down.

Whatever happens I do think there should be some
sort of change

The team in 3rd get's to play points wise the weakest side out the 4. Should be a formality but if you bomb against the likes of Wigan, QPR and already relegated Ipswich then it makes it more interesting. That's football.

As I've said previously I would have the top 3 from the PL and the top 3 from the Championship switch places. Then it would be a play off between 4th, 5th and 6th in the Championship against 17th in the PL. Maybe 5th and 6th play each other first, the winner of that plays 4th and then the winner of that plays 17th from PL.

However you work it I do think there should be the potential for 4 teams to go up/come down.

By far the most logical effort would be a round robin between the four with 3rd through 6th starting with 4-3-2-1 points.

The finalist would play the same amount of games (3)

In IPL it is a little different.

3rd and 4th play each other and winner goes to final

5th and 6th play each other and winner plays loser of 3rd and 4th place to get into the final.

Essentially the team that finishes 3rd has 2 bites at the cherry.

This. Double elimination makes sense.

Good for entertainment and the 2 Championship PO's really do emphasise that, so it's unlikely to ever change because that alone will bring in a load of cash.

Although I do agree on principle that the top 3 teams should be promoted. I know the PO's give more teams a chance, but Leeds, Norwich and Sheff United have been switching around from 1st, 2nd and 3rd all season and have clearly been the best 3 teams in the league so they all probably deserve to go up on that basis. But that's not how it works.

I mean on a personal level I'm glad Leeds haven't gone up but still.

It's just a weird money-making circus. Totally unnecessary.

Probably correct! However, there are already too many games throughout the season. Setting aside the financial greed, I think the home-away format is stupid. 3rd. and 4th. teams should have home advantage for single knock-out, with winning teams playing single game at stadium of team with best league record!

It is fair in that it is known before the season starts.
It does keep the season alive until the death as well.

Yes, for the Championship you can argue about greed, as it is a money spinner. But play offs happen down through to the non-leagues so it isnt the key factor.

At the end of the day sport is entertainment. And the play offs are arguably the most entertaining part of a season.

I agree with the 5th v 6th to play 4th with the winner playing 3rd in one leg ties format. Higher placed team with home advantage. Makes s lot of sense.

Play-offs don't make a lot of sense until you sit and watch them. Always entertaining games, especially the second legs.

Even friendlies can be entertaining. That's not the point. Why should a team that finished 6th be promoted ahead of one that finished 3rd?

The idea I really dislike is the playoff between (for instance) the 3rd place championship team and the 18th place Prem team.

Imagine if you had a play off for 4th CL spot
or a relegation play off to avoid 18th place
