I wish "assists" stats would get banned from football, its a completely pointless stat.
If you dribble past 4/5 players, go one on one with the keeper, take it past him and pass it to your mate who puts it into an empty net, goes down on paper the exact same way if somebody drills it at your feet, miscontrol, hastily pass it to someone 35 yards out who lashes a screamer top bag.
I mean you literally see people go on about goals and assists to prove how good or how bad a player is, goals yeah fair enough, but leave the assists out...
Also your odds of having more "assists" will drastically improve of you play with better players, you could put it on a plate every game and you got to depend on someone else to finish, completely meaningless!!!

Although If you want to see how could a creative player is then you should check key passes or chances created over assists.

Ye lets ignore Trents assist record. Irrelevant

Yes Rouge it is irrelevant. If he played for a team other than Liverpool, with worse players in attack, his assists would be much worse despite him being the same player.
Yet the fans of that team would all know just how good he was. It's the ultimate team game, each player impacts on other players and therefore their stats.

By that logic goal stats are irrelevant.

It is logical and they are. There have been many strikers with great records at one club who flop at another. We've had some in the past, Gary Birtles comes to mind, but there have been plenty more and at other teams.

Yeah and they are usually judged as flops because their goal stats aren’t sufficient.

Bit they were bought because their goal stats were.

Meaning goal stats are relevant. We got there in the end.

No it means there stats were only good in one team, not the second, so irrelevant in football terms. Relevant in getting a good price though.
Plus at the commencement of this I did say stats are only good if you have all the context. For fans they are useless.

This is hard work. I give up.

Stats are not irrelevant at all and frankly that's a ridiculous statement. However they shouldn't form the overall picture, they should be used alongside other things. Also as Manusince52 said, factors have to be looked at like the strength of the team, possibility of just not working out and one club but could still work out at another etc etc.
There are people who think stats are irrelevant, that is ridiculous and there are people who think stats are the be all and end all which is equally ridiculous. Many people on this forum struggle to find a common ground and go for one extreme or the other.
For example, for years stats people have been telling me our goalkeeper coach is awful as our goalkeepers had awful stats. In comes a world class goalkeeper and suddenly the goalkeeper stats are outstanding. What now? Did the coach go from being awful to outstanding? It's more likely that simply he's a good coach and we had poor keepers who were then replaced by a top keeper, hence the improvement. Not rocket science, I know but try telling that to the our goalkeeper coach is awful cult.
