I play at a semi decent level and the amount of teams that are struggling is staggering. Big clubs 10-15 years ago that had 4 orf 5 teams are now down to 2 and it's the same faces. Hardly any new players each year. It's a real shame that so many clubs, clubs that have been around for 120 years in some cases seem to be slowly dying off. Hopefully the world cup win can inspire some others, but it is a sport that you need to put a lot of time aside for, and when you get to 15-18, you don't want to give up a whole Saturday when your mates are all hanging out together having fun.

Very true, but when you're 41, i cant wait for a Saturday free from the wife and kids.

GT, I ended up moving to Victoria, Oz, with the family when I was just a kid. I've lived in Oz on and off for most of the subsequent 30 years. In the 90s when I was a teen, I lived in a small country town and sport was a massive part of the community. Cricket all summer and Oz football all winter - my closest real football club was 30 miles away. I didn't really realise the significance at the time, but the sporting clubs, cricket club in particular was an important feature in turning a few thousand people into a community. All regional/rural towns were the same.

I've not been associated with a club for many years now, partly due to living and working in other countries, but what you've described has happened to a lesser degree here in Oz, counterintuitively primarily in the bigger cities.

I'm a bit of a Test cricket purist snob and was firmly in the Packer and ODIs were the beginning of the end of cricket, but the T20 comp in Oz the last couple of years has actually reversed the downward trend in participation.

Do you think the Vitality Blast T20 (or whatever it's called) could have the same impact in the UK as the Big Bash has had in Oz? Even the women's T20 is becoming quite popular here too.

Interesting. My impression of Australia when I was there was that sports fans in general tend to be exactly that. Sports fans. So if you were in to Aussie rules, you tended to like rugby league and cricket. Over here it's different. Cricket still has a certain stigma as either boring or played by a certain class of person.
The T20 stuff has been vital in keeping counties going, if you look at revenue across the year, the comp is actually what's keeping them afloat. It's a 3 hour watch which you can do after work if needed. The casual fans are catered for.
In terms of club cricket, I don't know why there has been such a downward trend but every club I've played against the last couple of years have faced the same challenges in terms of player recruitment. Hopefully England's world cup win had an impact at grass routes.
