United publish retained and released list

Released United players June 2019:

Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, James Wilson, Regan Poole, Callum Whelan, Thomas Sang, Zak Dearnley, DJ Buffonge, Tyrell Warren, Matty Willock, Matthew Olosunde, Callum Gribbin, Millen Baars, Josh Bohui and James Thompson.

No absolute shockers there, given that we knew about Herrera and Valencia already, and Wilson and Poole are the only others to have ever featured for the seniors.

Of the Under 23s squad, it's disappointing to see Gribbin leave. Hopefully he manages to put his injury issues behind him and finds the right place to continue his development. There's still bags of potential in that lad.

I can't see any of the others really coming back to bite us in the arrse, but would hope to see Whelan, Buffonge and Bohui in particular go on to forge decent careers for themselves. All players with something a little extra about them IMO.

Mata has been offered a new two year deal, extensions have also been offered to defender Luca Ercolani and young keepers Alex Fojticek and Paul Woolston, and the club has exercised an option on lively midfielder Aidan Barlow's existing deal.

Two years for Mata seems one too many surely?

The club have said he has been offered a deal but didnt specify how long from what I saw.

Probably the ragtops applying a little artistic licence

Why would we offer mata two years? We know what we're going to get from him so it's not as though we need to worry about losing him in a year.

sorry but why not throw the mata money at Herrera who was/should have been much more of a priority

Matty Willock. So near, yet so far.

Almost came on against Arsenal 3 years ago. Was stripped and on the touchline ready to come on. Something happened and there was a change of plan and he was told to go and sit back down.

The highlight of his United career.

It's strange to me why people are so against us working to retain Mata's services.

Despite his physical limitations, he's a very useful player, is still our best number ten when we choose to play the diamond (which won't be every week), is one of few experienced winners we have in the squad, is an exemplary role model to our young players, and is an exceptional ambassador for the club.

If we were to bring in Fernandes, Felix or another young starlet to play at eight or ten, he'd be invaluable to have around as a mentor.

I’ve read that due to injuries and problems with mental health that Gribbin is going to quit football.

I've not heard anything about that. I really hope it's not true - it'd be a great shame.

That’s the rumour, though I don’t know how true it is.
