The women's world cup and VAR

One thing has emerged from the women's world cup competition that is a potential game changer. If the keeper moves an inch off the line and makes a save, the penalty is VAR'd and retaken. Prior to VAR when did you last see a penalty retaken for the keeper moving? In the game last night she was literally inches off her line when the ball was hit. Based on those standards, I reckon a lot of the penalty saves I've seen would have been disallowed. Gonna be an interesting VAR season next year.

All keepers are trained to 'dive forward'. They always have been for obvious reasons. If VAR is to continue to be used for international tournaments in the same way as it did last night then keepers are going to have to think again about how they approach penalties.

We are currently advising our guys (grass roots) to stand behind the line, and move forward that way.

You aren't allowed to stand behind the line. One foot has to be on the line or above it in the case of jumping.

All for VAR but I think in situations like this there needs to be some form of leniency similar to umpires call in cricket.

A keeper being off their line by a couple of cm or a striker being offside by a couple of cm is very unlikely to be the difference between a goal or not.

We allow our guys to have their feet behind the line anyway

The standard of goalkeeping is horrific though. I thought the bend it like Beckham keeper was over exaggerated, but from the goals I've accidentally seen on the news, it wasn't exaggerated.

Disagree. Compared to a few years ago I think the standard has really improved.

The Argentina goalkeeper produced a fantastic performance a few days ago.

is the interior of the goal technically within the field of play? Because of course the letter of the law (and VAR is designed to ensure the letter of the law is followed) insists that a player can't leave the field of play without the specific consent of the referee.

12.28.7 DELIBERATELY LEAVES THE FIELD OF PLAY WITHOUT PERMISSION
Players who leave the field without the referee’s permission most often do so for unsporting reasons – for example, to create an unfair offside situation (see Advice 11.10). They may also leave the field to indicate dissent or to “manage” the referee’s next decision. If a player does leave the field for some other reason without the referee’s permission to do so, and this results in gaining a tactical advantage for his or her team, the player has committed misconduct and must be cautioned and shown the yellow card.

You just have to have one part of your body over the line, doesn't have to be touching the line. So it's fine if you are a woman and have gigantic chest friends as you could stand a foot behind the line and your chest pals will hang over the line. Not so easy in men's football unless you get really excited about facing a penalty.

I've seen plenty of keepers beaten at near posts, one was a shot about as hard as a back pass. The outfield standard has improved a lot though.

Makes a joke of those goal line refs that don't even force a re-take when you can see keepers way off the line. Why have officials ignored the rule for so long? It's not because they couldn't see it was happening without the help of technology.

Has anyone ever seen one of those goal line refs actually make a decision 🤔
