Who is rich?

Boris Johnson has proposed raising the higher income tax threshold to £80k per annum. This will cost around £9bn per annum.

But this proposal has been met with fierce criticism by those on the left. These critics claim that this is a tax cut for the rich.

But the majority of those on this salary range include doctors, pilots, engineers, head teachers etc.

I have 2 questions:

1) Would you classify someone earning £80k per annum as rich?
2) If no to question 1 above, then who qualifies as rich in your definition?

Pesonally, I fully support this policy. For too long, the middle class have been squeezed without getting anything in return. Including losing the child benefit.

Rather than tax cuts or raises, I’d far rather they focused on corporate tax avoidance.
=============================

I can't see Johnson being the person to take that on.

I can’t see Johnson being able to dress himself in the morning so I hold out little hope of any vaguely sensible policy coming from him.

The tax cuts propose by BoJo seems like a gimmick to Tory members to secure votes.

The IFS did the forecast and said it would cost £9bn as laid out in the OP. Boris today has more or less promised increased funding for schools, police, social care and transport infrastructure. The two don't go together.

And yes, I regard someone who earns £80k a year as 'rich', 'well off', however you define it.

Or hard working, but don’t define as rich. Say they are well rewarded for their skills and efforts.

Just as aside as well, it's not just wages that matter too. I know people that earn low wages but are well off in terms of both assets and disposable income because of inheritance allowing them to build up sizeable equity and so don't have similar outgoings to others.

I fall into this cateogry. I earn less than 40k, as does my wife, but we're mortage free at 34 thanks to well off parents.

Makes our lives a hell of a lot easier.

There should be some form of Parental FFP.

Must feel hollow being mortgage free at 34 when you haven’t earned it yourself though 😂

Did I say they were well rewarded? I’m hard working, have key skills and am well rewarded. But never mentioned teachers and nurses.

I agree that £50k is not a very high salary to pay 40% tax (+ 1% NI don't forget) but I really don't think it will happen for 2 reasons.

1) Blustering Boris is an accomplished liar/avoider of the truth.
2) If Brexit happens with no deal the collapsing economy will give such a reduction in tax revenue as to make tax cuts impossible and benefit cuts a certainty.

I'm not saying Clueless Corbyn is much, if any better but this tax change will never happen
