If it is true you can see the difficulties those teams coming down have.
Do they try and retain their side and go for promotion again or do they try and knock 30-50m off their wage bill. Saw with Swansea when they got to January with little chance of promotion they ended up selling about 10 players.

Good comment this. I think it's a real problem and shows that the PL isn't the financial lottery win I once believed it was. Whilst the TV cash windfall is huge, to go from an average Championship wage bill having to compete with what those at the top table are spending, you have to outlay a hell of a lot, and as those at the top of your chart show, even those sums of money aren't really anywhere near enough.

Most clubs will try and retain a decent squad in the hope of getting back up straight away naturally, but even after getting rid of the real top earners straight away you're often left with a wage bill that's not sustainable after a couple of seasons like Sunderland and can easily end up right in the sh-t. Whilst it was awful to watch, I'm glad we didn't cripple ourselves. There's no chance we're going back up this or even next season I don't think, but going at it moderately means we can probably run our club at a slightly better level than where we were before for a good few seasons.

Unless you've a billionaire backer then it's nigh on impossible to get up and stay established, though I think you have that potential as with a big ground and fanatic fanbase, you're definitely a good prospect for investors...it's just getting the right ones as you already know....

Given the first half of that statement, Champers, we really shouldn't have had such a problem with the second half... but...

Fourteen years of chancers. Beggars belief.

The data serves to show the disparity in income between prem and championship and how the parachute payments create an unlevel playing field.

If you’re a team that has just gotten promoted to prem or indeed any prem team, surely you should be safeguarding your business with contracts that address wage structure should you get relegated ie either wages reduce or you have right to adjust contract upon relegation.

Jonty, your suggestion would be spot on - if parachute payments didn't exist. The idea behind parachute payments is that club's don't need to do that.

Problem is - once a club is relegated, there is a 'double or quits' gambling tendency. Let's gamble that we go straight back up. So the risk for the club is simply pushed back a season or two.

So it's not really a list of championship sides. The top three in the list were all sides with several consecutive seasons in the prem.
