Watching footie

Now the excitement of last season is dying away, well for United fans anyway, and the gossip stories are in full swing, ie a load of BS every day, time to talk about watching, what we like to see, and how we like to see it.
As it's my post I'll go first (and last if nobody likes it).
First of all I only really like live football. Now I was lucky, I got taken there when I was seven, and for the next forty years it was affordable for nearly everyone. Things changed after Sky, some good some bad, better stadia, most matches on TV, more safety and comfort, but all at a cost. If I was beginning now I would probably have a Sky subscription, watch it from the sofa and think I was getting the best, and in many ways I would be. But we are all a product of our past, so for me it will always be live, same with music, plays, anything really.
I have been very lucky in that two Scottish managers have given me great football and trophies galore. Now I think I'm a minority in this, but the trophies aren't what stick in the memory. What does is watching someone do something special right in front of me, preferably my side of the pitch. I have bags of special memories which I won't bore you with, nearly always a United forward doing the exceptional because I am one eyed when it comes to football.
Recently I did a list of great United players and Berba wasn't on it. I don't think he was great because he didn't influence games enough, he was the cherry on the cake, but he gave me so much pleasure with his skill.

Besides that I liked the tribal aspect, especially away, which for me was the cream, on my own, with Mick and Ray or on the coach, the laughs, the bellowing for the team, the pint after, it was great and I miss it.
Of course I wanted to win every game, every trophy, but somehow they are not my memories, except perhaps 1968, but the moments of magic.

Some Berba magic for you all to enjoy, sorry about that Pool fans but you have plenty you can provide yourselves, and even you may enjoy some of these;

Everybody has their own reasons, their own passions for watching those are mine.
Frpm the Babes, through Charlton, law and Best (my favourite era) through Robbo, the Cantona era, and beyond, it's the special players doing special things right in front of you that stick and make it worthwhile.

Watching football should be entertaining. It’s not the lack of trophies that bothers me, but the way we play the game. I remember a time when we used to win very little (a cup team really), but played entertaining football.

Maybe my age is making me a bit blinkered but when United were managed by SAF there seemed to be action all through the game in both boxes (At least until the result was in no doubt as after we just tended to see it out to the end. A much better way of conserving energy I'd have thought than what we have seen recently)

Its all about the game for me - trophies are nice, but i dont actually win them!! I watch loads of footie - from matches on tv to local teams both pro and amature. I also manage/coach 3 kids teams!

I started as a liverpool fan in the early 80s so its easy to tag me as a glory hunter as im not from Liverpool, but the reason i got into football was to watch exciting matches not to brag to my mates - at that time Liverpool were a just amazing to watch! it always make me chuckle when rival fans mock us from not winning the league - for me, the actually matches are far more important and ive enjoyed the Klopp era as much as any other era!

That was because controlling the game was not Fergies masterplan. He wanted us to attack, hurt their defence. Of course that left us more open at the back hence the action at both ends. We relied on our superior attack to win. Plus we had a great goalie and defenders. So the team was generally better than the opposition, but he didn't like the careful game so normally we went for it. This was modified towards the end of his tenure and we became ùore boring.

Remember watching United in 2002 and Veron hit an outside of the boot pass, on the floor, to Giggs down the touchline and it actually span back into Giggs' path who crossed and it deflected in. Sure it was a CL game v Olympiakos.

Ok. It didn't quite spin back but there was a degree of check on the ball! It looked better from the North Stand where I was too. Here's a link and it's about 3 mins in

Without prejudice, manusince, today you could substitute the name 'Klopp' for 'Fergie' and your description could apply 100% to Liverpool. I don't suppose you saw last night's game but, the raw talent coming through from our youths is exceptional.

Full marks to Alex Inglethorp and his staff, they deserve the plaudits.

I should add, a favourite highlight for me was in the 74th minute of last year's home game against City. Robertson took off like a man possessed and ran the whole pitch tackling every player he could get to, finally decking their Argentina international defender in their own penalty box.

Topped only by Salah pinging the ball into an empty net for the fourth goal and the win against City. As you rightly say, being in the stadium, seeing it live, you can't beat it.

Good stuff Jimmy, I agree with the Klopp comments, I'd have liked him at our club. I think you'll have a great time while he's there.
