Lukaku Inter Talks

The Guardian are reporting that Inter's Sporting Director has traveled to England to meet with United officials today to try and agree a deal for Lukaku.

First of all, I hope that we can agree a deal and get him off the books. If he does leave then I have a feeling that we will see Ben Yedder come in.

However, how would people feel if we let Lukaku go but didn't sign another striker? I personally wouldn't be too bothered. We have Rashford, Martial and Greenwood who can all play as the no.9 and I am eager to see Greenwood get a few games under his belt this season. I think it is going to be really interesting to see how our youngsters get on this season - especially if we do manage to offload Lukaku and Sanchez.

If Lukaku goes we absolutely need another striker.

I’m OK with Rashford scrapping it out with someone else for the number nine shirt, but that player shouldn’t be Greenwood or Martial.

As has been discussed at length previously, Martial is not a nine and shouldn’t be playing at the apex of the attack. He’s a wide forward who needs to be receiving the ball in deeper positions, on the turn or facing goal.

Greenwood is simply not ready to be challenging for the shirt, and like Berba, I suspect he will be used primarily as a right sided inside forward opposite Martial, and off the bench.

Starting the season with those three plus James, Sanchez and Chong to fill three positions would be a big mistake.

Where do you see Gomes fitting in this season Rosso? Just as backup in the AM position, or will he get some game time in the wide positions?

He’s not a wide player; he needs to be playing right in the middle of the park where he can get on the ball and influence the game with his passing.

He’s backup for and a perfect apprentice to Pogba - he should be playing at eight in a three man midfield or the left side of a diamond.

Hopefully he’ll get a start or two in the cups, but I think we’ll see more of Greenwood and Chong tbh.

As much as I want Lukaku gone, Rashford is not yet a proven goalscorer and we would be unlikely to replace Lukaku with Rash just getting a deal surplus of £200k a week.

If Rashford gets injured, we have no backup. Martial could replace him, but then our LW looks weak.

Agreed, I think that Chong and Greenwood are both ahead of him.

The reason I asked about him being played wide is that I think he had a couple of cameos out there off the bench? It was only a few minutes, so doesn't mean much, but just wondered if he might be an option there.

I agree with the Op. Will not be bothered. I think we will see an improvement with Rashford. People forget he's only 21.

Yes, I do think that because he has been around for a few years that he is judged a bit unfairly. At the same age some United fans were questioning Ronaldo and his end product. Then all of the sudden it clicked and he was away. Not saying that Rashford will ever be that good, but people seem to judge him as though he is the finished product. He has great potential for me, but at 21 it is still potential. A season as the main man will help to bring him on massively in my opinion, assuming he can handle the pressure.

I reckon that's about right, Elvis. Which is also why bringing in someone like Ben Yedder would look a sensible move. It's not a superstar who blocks Rashford's development, but an experienced pro in his prime who can shoulder some of the burden of expectation, maybe teach him the odd thing, and of course provides a Plan B and injury cover.

Yes, wouldn't be against it.

It would mean we’d have to see Sanchez on the pitch.
