so with Utd being quoted 50 million reportedly for longshaft, does that make the 75 million bid for ol' slab head look a better deal than we first thought... the market has gone crzy i tell ya!!! CRAAAAAAZY!!!

To be fair I don't think Newcastle think he's worth £50m either. That's clearly a stay away he's not for sale type of valuation. So I don't think we can say that's the market rate now because it isn't. They sold Perez for £30m who is much more established and still young.

No, I think they are just chancing their arm. Ashley will sell anyone for the right price. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a deal is agreed in the coming weeks.

CurrentlyInChina, yes, my point wasn't to justify £50m but a wider one. E.g. I bet the asking price for Perez would have been higher if we'd been in for him. It's a difficult path for us to tread. Obviously we need to avoid paying ridiculous sums. But I think it's just as obvious we'll end up paying more for a player than a club in the second quartile of the PL would for the same man.

Aparently this Lo Celso player Spurs are after was valued at 40m Euro by Betis but when Spurs enquired the price went up to 70m
They see EPL as a cash cow, and the top teams (and probably Utd more than any) even more so. Plus anyone who negotiatesd with Levy knows he'll drive the price down so you may as well buy high.
I think many clubs just need to be patient. Time will usually get you a better deal, with regards to Europen clubs people seem to forget exactly how much money 50m is. To annyone below the top teams, it is a staggering sum of money...Its more than for example, what a team like Betis get in TV money.
If you dot want to be ripped off, strong negotiating and patience is often the key...doesnt always tally with getting a squad together for pre-season however!

RR, that is the case. £50M in this case is like saying we don't want to sell. And knowing MA that wouldn't be the case. I think the best way to deal with it is to walk away and look at other targets. Sometimes you have to put your foot down. As with Perisic, Inter didn't budge from their valuation, we pulled out. Same has to happen. We can't keep overpaying for players. Especially when there is a very high risk even at the supposedly 25m max we're willing to pay for this guy.

Reading your posts on the various threads, I'm beginning to sense some scepticism on your part towards this potential transfer, CiC

I’m completely shocked that people are still surprised about transfer fee inflation

Do you think 50 million for an unknown player is inflation or idiocy.
I opt for idiocy.

I agree. The next Ronaldo perhaps, the next Henderson, perhaps not. From what I’ve seen if longstaff, not much, we’d be insane to pay 40m for him.

At a structured offer of 25m I'd say it might be worth a gamble. At 50m and his injury, it's a concern. We've not had much luck with them nor signing players who have such issues in recent years.

It's not sustainable though. Soon you will have to choose between building a new stadium and signing James Ward-Prowse.

It's not inflation here, it's just two clubs trying to mug us off. When Liverpool bought Carrol for 35m that wasn't even the going rate at the time for a player of his level, because Aguero signed for similar a few months later iirc. They just got completely rinsed by Newcastle and the same would happen this summer if we paid for Maguire and Longstaff.
