Exactly what I was thinking.

This woman is crazy, we're turning back, she's tripping and stuff, just said there are aliens flying around who are about to ambush us. Please send us a couple of jets just in case.

Like wtf are the jets going to do? I watched an episode where a whole plane load of passengers had passed out after there was a mid air decompression and jets were sent up to take a look. Fair enough but they couldn't do anything about it but a woman going nuts? Wtf?! Whoever made the decision to spend tax payers money on two jets to escort a plane to the place it was already going because a woman is going nuts needs to pay the fine.

Think the jets are scrambled to ensure the reason for the plane's u-turn is entirely genuine and not an excuse for an actual hijack or rogue pilot to do a bit of harm to the wider public.

Obvs been watching to many Hollywood disaster movies

Yep, doesn’t matter if it’s a petite woman or 10 jihadists, if someone’s endangering an aircraft and the distress call comes in for a u-turn they’ll likely scramble an escort. Likewise if a jet deviates massively off course, even if a distress call has been sent they’ll escort anyway in case that plane starts zooming towards a sky scraper etc. They’ll scrambled jets on 9/11 but the call came too late and they couldn’t get there in time. Remember seeing an interview with one of the fighter pilots who said he could see the plumes of smoke from the WTC from miles and miles away as he approached, and knew he was too late.

Jets are used to get a visual into the aircraft so they know it's a genuine emergency situation.

Planes can't just turn around randomly without due process.
