Maguire concerns

So again the press are reporting United are on the verge of signing him for £80m (£70m with £10m in add ons)

Decent bringing the ball out and a threat from set pieces, on the other hand he’s not the quickest and is imo only okay as a defender

What worries me is firstly he’s not what you’d consider to be a natural athlete, and if reports are true he’s a bit of a party boy, that’s not a good combination

"the only defender we have that he is better than is Rojo."

Fackinell I know he might not be everyones cup of tea but the amount of bollox on here is ridiculous, people are seriously overrating our own CB's now.

I agree there’s a case to be made that he’s also at least on a par with Jones.

Otherwise, I agree with MUDD.

I think he'll do well, and will make a difference too in the way we're able to begin forward moves from the back.

I have no problem with people being against certain signings, or thinking they're the wrong player, or too expensive etc. I've been against a fair few in recent years. As long as people don't turn it into an agenda, and if he's signed, then try their very best to pick fault with every little thing and blow it out of proportion to prove themselves right.

Sometimes it does seem like people would rather be right than see the player prove them wrong and do well.

I don't think he significantly improves us to be worth £80m.

I suppose what he could bring to the table is some leadership and aerial ability.

To be honest I'd rather we see if we can get a partnership going between one two of the CBs we have already as I think AWB will make a massive difference to our defence so I'm sure that'll improve the unit as a result. I'd much rather spend the £80m on a top class DM.

If he does sign though I do hope I'm wrong and that he turns out to be better than I think he'll be. He'll get my support 100% but for that £80m I'd hope that our scouting network would be able to find someone in the world who could offer the same.

Nice to see Ole pretty much confirm Tuanzebe won't be going out on loan again and will be a part of the squad for the season. Think if he stays injury free he'll be above Smalling, Jones and Bailly in the pecking order soon enough.

United are in a very difficult position, the very best players are not looking at them as a desirable destination.

No Champions League football, again, no realistic hope of winning the Premier League, and a Manager, though loved at the Club, with no track record of success in the big leagues.

On that basis, they have to take risks in the transfer market, and on that basis Maguire would be a very good signing. He is better than they have, for now, that is probably all they can do.

I've never seen any suggestion of that myself. On the contrary, he comes across as very down to Earth. (But still ambitious.)

Works both ways, though. People will overstate performance to try and justify their own position on Maguire, and especially the price.

I mean the spin I’ve seen from some United fans about the price shows it’s already starting.

People are trying to convince themselves that he’s a significant upgrade on what we have (he just isn’t) to justify us wasting £80m on him, ffs.

Time will tell whether people here end up loving or hating Maguire. I reckon about two weeks after Robb's back from holiday and nailed his colours to the mast.
