Positives & negatives from the Inter game.

Yes I know it was a friendly, and yes Inter are a game behind us in their pre season.

Positives I saw.

1. The pre match and the after match interviews with the manager were all positive as opposed to last years tour.

2. Pogba not looking like someone who is waning to leave.

3. Wan-Bissaka. Having a RB that looks like he can defend and this lad is one hell of an athlete.

4. Greenwood and Chong. Both look set to feature this season. Chong is going to draw a hell of a lot of fouls with those quick feet.

5. When the multiple changes happened all the players new what system to fall into straight away. Contrast that to the Liverpool pre season last year when we were all over the place for the last twenty minutes.

6. Lots of fast passing and movement. Long may it continue as well as the the much higher press and maintenance of it.

7. McT looks to be carrying on his improvement under Ole.

The few negatives

1. Matic and Pogba don't work as a midfield two. They can't.

2. Lingard. Loads of movement, no end product.

3. Putting the ball in the net. We should have scored more than one.

I have no idea what game you were watching Hippo, but we were not slow to transition at all.

.................

There were two instances in the first half where Pogba and Lingard slowed it down when they shouldn't.

In the second half the young uns moved it round very quickly. I felt sorry for Mata, his lack of mobility was so evident playing with them.

Last season our transitions were painful to watch but I have to agree against Inter I thought we moved the ball back to front faster and importantly with more purpose than I’ve seen for a long time, we carried a threat through the whole game, which again hasn’t been seen in a long time as we have only had at best one decent half in us.

Sounds like yesterday was very promising, with young players showing lots of exuberance and flair.

However, I still think we’re a couple of players short and can’t bring myself to be optimistic about our overall chances right now.

If we go into the season with Matic as a starter and OGS keeping up this 4-2-3-1 idea with Pogba and Matic as the two nothing will change from the end of last season.

If it doesn’t he won’t be in the job for long, thought Ole was a bit of a rabbit in the headlights towards the end of last season, it’s not pleasant to see a club legend in difficulty so let’s pray things o positively

If there are no additional signings then my first choice in midfield would be Pogba, McT and Matic as the DM. If we did sign Fernandes though I'd move McT back into DM as I think Pogba and Fernandes could work with energy around them. With the extra pace we seem to have in the team now as well we should face teams who defend deeper so we need creativity and shooting ability from midfield.

A full and successful pre season really helps players for the new season. Last years after the WC as well was a comic strip disgrace and we paid for it.

I have renewed optimism for the coming season.

Cant wait for the Chelsea game.

This.

If we end up one-nil down facing a team defending with ten men, I could deal with it for the last ten minutes of a game.

But not a single PL fixture is going to be as comfortable as Saturday’s game was.

So do I. As does every United fan.

But we won't make Top Four unless something(s) fundamentally change at the club.

There are several little pieces of evidence of fundamental changes in various areas: tactics, culture, transfer preferences, youth policy, personnel around the youth development.
