Rules are rules.

What do you do when you don't believe in the rule? Drinking on trains after 9pm for example. Fack that.

I checked the date on the article - assumed it would be 1st April.

I’ve been in this pub quite a few times. It’s not a bad pub, and one of only a handful in Hale. The more popular Railway is a few doors down, which is a lot more expensive than the midland.

Wasn’t in when it was shut down but a mate of mine was. He said his phone rang and he went to answer it, and a bar man came over and told him no mobiles allowed. So he turned off his phone. Then the Barman went into a back room and a few minutes later came out and told everyone to drink up, the pub was closing. Apparently Humphrey Smith was in there and just told the barman that he was closing the pub for good.

The official line is because people were ignoring the ban on mobile phones, but it’s rumoured that that is just a smokescreen and that Humphrey Smith just wanted to close the pub anyway and used the ban as an excuse in which to do so with immediate effect.

It’s happened before though a few years back. Closed for a number of weeks and then reopened again.

He is renowned for being a bit weird / eccentric.

Sam Smith's bitter is ace. Really miss it. And I miss my old home village, Hale too. Always preferred The Railway, like Ripley, but the beer was worth the odd visit.
