Jansson article on The Athletic

Phil Hay has posted an article this morning about Jansson that explains it better than anything I've read so far. Key points:

- Bielsa wanted Jansson gone as quickly as possible which is why the fee was low, club didn't hold out. Deals on table from abroad but Brentford only English team interested.

- Jansson didn't like that Bielsa was distant from players and wanted a closer relationship.

- The reason Jansson was dropped by Garry Monk for those 2 games in 2016/17 (Brighton was one I think) was because of an incident with Matt Grimes in training which angered teammates.

- Some members of the squad were unhappy that after the playoffs, Jansson went and sat on the pitch alone as it made him the focus

- When Bielsa took over, Jansson was at the World Cup. Bielsa told him to take some time off but didn't expect him to take off 3 weeks which is why Jansson didn't start as first choice.

- This summer, Jansson was asked to be back at the start of preseason. He expected some extra time off and asked other internationals in the squad to request an extended leave of absence. But Dallas and BPF reported back for first day and others like Klich Alioski only took an extra week. This is what prompted Leeds to ask Jansson to stay away until 12th July.

- Transfer wasn't necessary for FFP as we had sold Clarke but did help strengthen the accounts further.

- Bielsa rates Jansson as a defender very highly.

Club also has a player relations manager.

I think you should do that role mate, when you've left the Samaritans of course

"likes to keep a differentiation between player/friend."

There's nothing wrong in that, its the same as the Military, you're trained to work with each other but they say don't be to friendly,(reasons are a little different but are there!)if he gets to close to one and not the other it could have people saying he has his favorites, something that people always moan about around here and something he doesn't want!..

He tries to treat the players all the same so chooses not to get to close to any one person!..

Oh, and being x-military like most when you finish with the military I'll say you'll not find better mates than the ones you served with!..

I'm gutted that Pontus has gone BUT I think Bielsa's actions regarding Jansson - to ship him out quickly - were quite understandable, even if it meant losing money and alienating the fans. The Villa game was the turning point in the Jansson-Bielsa relationship, I would imagine. Old school or not, Jansson badly overstepped the mark, in front of the whole world. Yes, we need strong personalities, but we need players with self-discipline and professionalism more. He was such a sad plonker sitting on the pitch on his own like that.

Jansson - good player but a bit of a dipstick. Likes to be centre of attention. Likes his own way. Met his match in Bielsa.

Shame they couldn’t kiss and make up.

Bielsa has a fun side - as shown when Bamford scored that screamer in training. He won’t be taken as a fool though.

From what I've read the turning point must have been that Jansson tried to encourage the other internationals to ask for time off. That's undermining the manager.

I agree that a manager needs to be able to work with characters and deal with them. But if you're trying to get other players to go against the managers wishes, that's a step too far.

Sometimes personalities just clash. I’m sure we all know people we just don’t get on with and never will. If it’s at work you sometimes have to suck it up or move. In your personal life you have more choice.

True, Jaz, but every player makes mistakes and a couple of decent games later, it's all forgotten. Great managers can turn players' mistakes into player loyalty, just by the way they deal with the player and the situation. Case in point - Rednose after Cantona high-kicked a fan. How do you think Bielsa would have dealt with that? My guess is that rehabilitation of the player would have been at the bottom of his list of priorities.

Yes, that was spectacular, wasn't it. I love Eric! Rednose did so well with managing him, got the very best from him. Gutted Wilko couldn't do the same and agree that Bielsa would've rowed him out sharpish it it was him. Agree too with Best about the turning point - trying to influence others is definitely out of order and a bit snide.

Bielsa has proven the value of his coaching style. Last season was extraordinary and it may well continue this year, judging by Saturday. We've lost Pontus and Jansson and not signed any permanent replacements, and still we're doing the business. This style is demanding and therefore discipline and professionalism must be maintained, the team and coach working together as a unit. I'm so gutted Pontus blew it but he did blow it. After all, Cantona wasn't undermining Rednose's authority, was he? Yes, he lost his self-discipline, like Pontus, but Cantona didn't argue with Ferguson on the touchline, in front of the world, did he?

Bielsa has principles and expectations, and he is prepared to deal with everything, but I don;t perceive that he holds a grudge. I get the feeling that players hold the grudge and keep digging at him.

I'll keep Bielsa over any of them

When a player gets one over the coach or whatever you want to call him than the coach has lost!..

Pontus got his way the term before last when he reported late back from the Internationals and tried to play it again last term, but this time apparently he tried to get other Internationals to play his game and they didn't!..

That is enough for any coach stamp his authority and let the club know who is in charge!..

Well done Bielsa in stopping player power taking over like it did when Cellino was in charge!..

Problem was when Cellino was in charge he had a lot to do with it!..
