Ole Presser (its a Northern thing)

Henry Winter:

Manchester United are going back to their roots. I like it.

The message coming out of the club is that the manager sees player like Tuanzebe as stepping up and coming in as the number four defender.

My biggest surprise is that they haven't got more out.

====

Simon Stone:

It was an upbeat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United's press briefing this morning.

Predictably, the Norwegian deflected away the irritation many fans - on social media at least - feel at the club's transfer business.

To Solskjaer, losing a key member of his strikeforce - Romelu Lukaku - and not getting a replacement is not a reason to complain.

It merely provides an opportunity for the likes of 17-year-old Mason Greenwood, who Solskjaer is convinced will score goals.

====

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is "delighted" with his club's summer transfer business.

"Do you know I think when the transfer window closes it's a great feeling of relief now it's done now we know we're looking forward and I'm delighted with the three we've signed."

On whether the he expected more transfers: "Well that's not the feeling inside the club and the feeling with the fans I've met are excited with the ones we've had there are always going to be fans out there wanting to sign players that's part and parcel of being here, the players are here now and have been shown that trust and we believe in them."

====

On Lukaku:

"It was time now for Romelu Lukaku to go because I think we got a good deal, he's happy so I think both parties ended that deal as it should be," Solskjaer said.

"Rom was injured for a while this pre-season, and didn't participate so I just hope for him he'll get a good start at Inter Milan."

On missing Lukaku's goal-scoring: "Of course Rom has a good record and stats he's one of the top number nines around when you want to play with that kind of striker, target man, for me I'm very confident that we'll get goals from Martial and Rashford"

"I believe Mason Greenwood is going to be playing and involved a lot and when he is he's going to score goals."

====

On transfer window:

Ole Gunnar Solskjær did shine a light on why Manchester United failed to make more additions that Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

The money, apparently, was there.

But in the end the right players did not come available, according to the United boss.

“It’s not about a quick fix. It’s a long rebuild and about the right people coming. When you haven't got the right ones or the correct answers from the players you wanted or if there is doubt, most of the time there's no doubt. You’d rather trust the ones we have."

United start the season with Chelsea at home followed by Wolves away. In last season’s corresponding fixtures, United got one point.

For Solskjaer’s sake, I hope they do better this time around.

====

On Sanchez:

"Alexis has come in and trained well. He's four or five weeks behind the boys but he's a striker that we think is going to score goals."

====

Attack better than last season?

Towards the end of last season we didn’t score a lot of goals and you do think players will have an impact and Mason Greenwood pathway would have been a lot more different if we had another forward there and I believe Mason is going to be playing and involved a lot and when he is he’s going to score goals.

====

Understand fans negative mood?

Of course we want to put that right and the only way we can put an doubts is by playing good football, showing the team we want to be, the style we want to play and our fans when they see that intention have always been supporting the team but within the team and the club we’re feeling very confident and don’t feel that negativity you’re talking about.

====

Sanchez? Could he go?

Alexis has come in and trained well, of course he’s four or five weeks behind the boys and he has not played apart from the one behind closed doors here, I think he’ll see this as an opportunity as well to make his mark.

I do expect him to stay, there’s a striker there we think is going to be able to score some goals.

====

Captain?

There’s a few here in that group beneath Ashley and there are some leaders. You might get a clue on Sunday.

====

Players still leave?

There might be, the thing is it’s not about who we don’t want here, it’s about who we want here and you’re gonna see that in the team selections and who’s with us in the long run.

Why United did not sign a Romelu Lukaku replacement

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United did not recruit a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in order to prioritise the development of Mason Greenwood.

I really hope Fred can crack it this season as without being Mr Cliche it will be like a new signing. There were some signs at some stage last season he was getting good but then he went back to being shiiit. Let’s hope another summer at the club helps
-------------

In Fred's defence, he joined the club at a really bad time. Jose had basically given up and we were very disjointed in attack and indeed all over the pitch. Hopefully with a bit more stability he will be able to improve his performances - many foreigners do take a season to get to grips with the pace of the PL.

If you read the bit in the OP about the captain he is telling you Young won't be starting.

Will it be Maguire? Or Lindelof maybe.
-----------------------

I think that long term he will have Maguire in mind. But can he do that right now in his first game? If not, he needs to pick someone that won't be around for too long, otherwise how do you take it off him and give it to Maguire in a year or two?

I agree on Fred. He has to show improvement or he will end up out the door next season.

He needs the confidence that goes with knowing this is where you belong. McT is now starting to show this. Hopefully Pereira can as well. He isn't a youngster anymore.

I'd like to believe it with Fred but I just dont see a player in there at all. Really believe we've signed a dud.

Periera's a funny one - he has the skillset to be a good midfielder but is normally just completely ineffective. Apart from that one half against Southampton he hasn't really had any positive influence in any game.

Hmmm, he is an odd one. He is probably our most comfortable midfielder on the ball and it happy to take it in tight situations. He always makes himself available. But I am not sure that he does enough once he has the ball to impact the game. Perhaps he has played a bit within himself under Jose? Lets not forget that Jose was training him to be a DM, so he might have been a bit confused by his role. I'll give him another season, but he does need to do more.

One final thing. Greenwood is eighteen in around seven weeks. Doesn't eighteen sound so much better than seventeen. Plenty have made debuts at eighteen and gone on to have a great career?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we told everyone Mason was turning 22 soon, and we expected 12 or more goals out of him this season, I don't think we'd get an argument. The lad plays like a more mature player, and when I see him out there - it's like RvP V2. He's going to score goals, and not just against Ropey and Cup teams. That lad is fackin talented and he's made a believer out of me.

I don’t think many (maybe the odd one) are disputing that he’ll be a very good, possibly a great, player and hopefully with us. It’s the idea that he’s “replacing” a proven PL goalscorer that worries people.

Lukaku, if nothing else, was a good flat-track bully, and someone’s going to have to pick up that slack. We don’t have a proven goalscorer in the squad, really.
