Hopes and fears

Ole clearly has something, intelligence, determination, work ethic are all there. So I hope he has the something more intangible to make it. And that is the certainty that you are doing it right and will succeed.
Cloughie did it by arrogance, he called himself bighead, he was sure he knew best and he was right.
SAF did it by bloodymindnessness, he was going to do it his way, whatever.
Pep does it by inherited knowledge from Barça.
It's vital, when things go wrong, and they will, call it a blip and still believe you are right, even if the temptation is there to play save, to listen to the thousand voices giving you advice.

Sean Dyche, manager of my old stamping ground is an example, what he has achieved is remarkable, he is another like SAF who is bloody minded.

But for it to work you need early success, then you get everybody onside, believing in you, trusting you. In fact you have achieved the most important thing, the collective will, the all working together and knowing, not just hoping, that results will come.

Our first two games are tough, we could lose them both, it would not be a shock, and the fear is that Ole will start to play safe. The next three games are winnable, do that and we are up and running.

When Ole was at Molde he had instant respect, he had starred at Man Uts, that gave him great status. he doesn't have the same advantage here, he has to earn it. He can only do that by showing he knows what he's doing.

The hope therefore, is that he can get us off to a good start, that the players start to believe in him, even the Pogbas, if that happens the skies the limit when he's got the final pieces of the jigsaw.
The fear is we will have a really bad run, trust will evaporate and it will end in tears.

I think he needs the modicum of luck that everyone needs, gets us up around the top 4 mark and keeps us there, and if he does that I think he will go on to have a career with us.
It depends on Ed, the coaches and players as well, it's not all in Ole's hands, but a lot is, so show us what you can do Ole, and give us some excitement on the way.

Longstaff had a pretty poor game - really don’t see how the hell he’s worth half of £50 million let alone that.

I've often maintained that in an alternative universe various little pieces of bad luck that went against Moyes were reversed and he enjoyed a winning start and won that confidence / overcame the inevitable mistrust, and went on to enjoy a successful career at United. I've always thought that his greatest shortcoming wasn't in the ideas he had for the club but in his inability to execute them, which is to say he failed to make players believe he had it in him to follow Fergie.

I don't know how Ole will work out but at least you can't smell the fear in him, he doesn't have that rictus grin and sweaty temples that scream "get me out of here, I'm out of my depth!"

As 1952 says, win a few games (which can be as much about run of the ball as excellence) and have a few bold decisions pay dividends and that projection of leadership starts to look real.
