Gary Neville on Ander Herrera

"You're not crying over Fellaini leaving. Herrera, to be fair, huffed and puffed, but there's loads of him - there's loads of them around, there's loads of Ander Herrera's. He's nothing special." #mulive [sky]

I have to say I agree with Neville 100%.

The problem is we didn’t upgrade or even replace him though.

He’s reluctant to criticise the owners.

..........

He was reluctant to say Jose should be sacked as well despite all available evidence at the time.

Yeah he says that he refuses to say that any manager should be sacked out of principle

think its probably because of how it went for him at valencia
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was a bit like that before Valencia. Fergie didn’t like the sacking culture of clubs at the top, so that probably had the biggest influence on Neville’s attitude towards sacking managers.

Elvis greater than the sum of his parts, a slightly more skillful player might not have brought as much to the team

Herrera was a good player. Not great, but good. However, it is his attitude, application and leadership qualities that mean he is a bigger loss than his ability alone.

Yes, as many realise.

There seems to be lots of negativity from fans on here re our players, ex players, execs and the weaknesses within the squad.

Personally I prefer to be positive/ optimistic and enjoy it rather than shouting out the negatives

I think to say Herrera huffed and puffed is perhaps a little bit unfair because he did possess some quality, more than what Gary's maybe giving him credit for going by that interview but I do agree with him on the whole. He was a player we could easily have replaced, the only problem is we didn't and because of that, we'd have been much better off with him than without this season.

Had our recruitment been up to scratch though at the time Herrera joined, I seriously doubt we would've signed him in the first place given the calibre of player we could've got instead at a similar if not lower price.

I reckon we had a very good chance of signing any one of Gundogan, Vidal, Kroos, Pjanic, Rakitic or Thiago around that time. At least two of them we know were turned down by two managers.

I'd much prefer we had him available right now put it that way.

A midfield of mc tominey pogba and herrera would actually be pretty decent and allow pogba to play in his best position. We should have tried to sign him up couple of years ago but that was obviously Jose or eds fault too

Herrera was worse than ordinary.

Might just as well have paid mo farah to run around amlessly for 10 km, at least he would do it in less then 30 minutes and give a chance for that vital 'last 60 minute substitution'.

Herrera's arrival was indicative of just how poor united's direction (or lack of) has been in the last 6 or so seasons.

Waste of a useful space in the squad for way too long.

And, to make matters worse, he was often on the pitch when mata was overlooked. Ridiculous, and just not the United I know and love.

I am a massive ander herrera fan

he was technically very good but did not moan about being tasked with doing the dirty job. Always gave 120% in my eyes

I seriously hope op has misrepresented nevile's comment, otherwise i will have to say nevile is not only disrespectful but ignorant. If i must add Nevile himself was not a talent and neither were the likes of fletcher but many respect what thhey did for the club.

He made that point about himself and Fletcher. He knows his value, it’s hardly disrespectful to point out that Herrera isn’t anything special because he isn’t.

Herrera is a lot better than Gary's comment or the Op seems to think. Our form last season without him shows how important he is. He a very intelligent player and technically good too. I still maintain that we should have signed a box to box MF as Herrera was very good as a DM in Pogba's first season at United. Instead we dropped him and signed Matic. And now here we are, needing to replace him and Matic, the latter who is still here and has been very poor two-thirds of his time with us. There is some need by some of our fan base to undermine his ability and see him as a grafter as its easier to make the case for him leaving.

Statistically, he was much like Kante that season as well.
