Toxic Twitter

Afternoon all just heard about the Pogba racial abuse, watching football focus. I’m not a twitter user myself. I think it’s utterly toxic and should have been forcibly shut down as quickly as it sprung up. The racist incidents over the last week being a prime example of just why. The argument that doing that would be punishing the many for the idiot actions of the few. I don’t think applies here, as there does appear to be a high proportion of nasty idiots on Twitter. The troll type personalities gravitated toward it immediately, since it's perfect for their brand of foul. Though all twitter users are trolls obviously.

Alas Twitter won’t be getting shut down. But with people now descending as far as posting KKK lynching pictures (or similar) on player’s accounts. Are we not at the point of clubs needing to do something other than moan to Twitter, who clearly aren’t doing a damn thing. Is there anything they really can do about it? Top players didn’t exactly struggle for exposure before it and IMO they don’t NEED it now. If I was a player I wouldn’t be anywhere near it.

I was thinking of all players blocking all posters. The players still post their updates and fan thanks etc and fans would still have the ability to follow their favourites. Just no more ability to post. Other than say, selected words or phrases of praise or friendly bantz ridicule for performance. The steps above, I’d see as something to first widely notify and warn fans will happen, if the crap doesn’t stop. Unfortunately this toxic behaviour is not leaving twitter. Be it racist, threatening or just plain foul. Players and their families shouldn’t have to put up with it. Whether this would work is another story. Any other ideas to control the toxic clown massive?

Skimmed it to be fair, was on the train. Did he say that?

Yeah in the first paragraph.

To be fair, the solution in the test of the article isn’t as bad in comprison.

But it defrats the purpose of social media if these people cannot interact with their fans. The toxicity of a small minority shouldn’t really deter famous people from using these platforms.

Ok, varying degrees though, this is specific and anonymous, Facebook is not and twitter isn’t really either. When I refer to SM I mean those two generally and shiiit like Instagram.

There isn't really much difference other than the size of the user-base and the topic of discussion. If ja606 was not focussed on football and had 2 mill users it would be no different.

There used to be people on here that would make jokes about paedophilia etc. some football fans still make chants about such topics as well as rape, etc.

Then we get into larger debates about what is racism and what isn't. Should man united be shut down because of the allegedly racist lukaku song that was sung by fans when he first arrived, or for what a small section fans say online?

It's nothing personal lads but I get annoyed when people single out individual platforms when it is a societal problem. Yes, Twitter and other platforms like JA606 could potentially request addresses and more personal info but is that what we really want?

It’s an issue that’s discussed at high level, how to stop this sort of abuse, and so far not much has got done. Pogba or anyone should not have to face toxic abuse for simply doing their job.

I agree Pogba shouldn’t have to face toxic abuse but there’s not much that can be done. You cannot completely police the internet.

Not for the breadth of users on platforms like twitter. The cost would be staggering to attempt which is why they don’t. That said, learning algorithms to vet comments could help a bit, but as we k or on here there’s always ways around those sort of filters.

Twitter is a community of over 300 million monthly users (I'm not even a Twitter user myself though I registered an account as a kid which I've never posted with). Shutting it down because of trolls would be silly. The challenges are about moderation of users and content and not the existence of the site itself.

Gent

This is a societal problem to a degree. Social media always had a moronic element, as does society. The issue is that twitter as a platform, changed social media overall. You had plenty of online jackasses yes. But "The Online Troll" generation was either born of or graduated from twitter.

The 150 characters max, in the beginning literally encouraged trolling since not much constructive argument can be made with it. A whole generation it seems, in turn began to apply a twitter mentality to all of their online interaction. Social media simply was not as toxic as its become until Twitter came along.

As for shutting it down, that's just my personal wish. Not gonna happen. And I'd have shut it down straight away because IMO, as soon as it begun, the writing was on the wall just which way it was steering online interaction. It was plain to see as it done it too. I don't blame twitter for all societies woes. Just for not taking responsibility for the morons they are exposing the rest of us to.

And don't even get me started on Instagram laugh>

Im not calling for a shut down, I just think one would be great. I'm a realist so get that it's here to stay. The lockout scenario for players, I mean as pretty much as a wake up call to fans. "Stop abusing the privilege of talking to your favourite players, or THEY'LL take it away from you completely.

Some are just hard core idiots but I think it might make most fans think a little bit more about some things they post. Alot just being thought/heartless in what they say, might just choose better of it, after a short lockout.
