Ole's brain fart moment

Title is harsh
and i have mentioned this a few times but i think this deserves an article of it's own

i remember when lvg took over utd, I absolutely loved him in the initial weeks. We were creating bucket loads but losing but many fans were excited about the future. Then we played against leicester and lost 5-3 from a comanding position. And imo lvg decided to stop with the expansive football chosing to play safe/boring football instead. That was his brain fart moment and he never recovered from it.

in march after experiencing a tremendous start and the highs of winning in Paris things started to wobble. We lost to arsenal and wolves in consecutive games but many utd fans were pleased with the performance. Then we scrapped a 2-1 victory against watford on th 30th of March. The aftermath was ole having a brain fart moment imho.

he correctly identified the problem of us not being able to control games, but his answer was imho beyond stupid.

at the time, i felt he will learn very quickly that was not the solution. But he didn't. But I excused this, thinking herera injury meant he was short of personal and this will be addressed. But it wasn't

the transfer window is now closed and imho our midfield is now poorer than it has ever been (especially if pogba is playing cdm). I hope ole finds a solution to the midfield question quickly or this will become more than just a blip. When we did not sign a cm i thought we would stuggle but will still do enough to not be in perilous position. The last thing I want to see is OGS fail, but i fear he cannot see past the idea of pogba being the next pirlo/scholes.

I hope i am wrong.

Pogba was used exactly the way he should be in oles initial period. He shouldn't have moved him back.

I agree. We can't afford to play Pogba in a two. I'd be happier with two workhorses behind him than what we're seeing at the moment. I think even Matic instead of Lingard today would have been better.

in trying to solve one problem ole has created 2

the initial problem was not being able to control game but our attack was devasting.
now he has moved pogba deeper we still cannot control games and our attack looks 1 dimensional

Totally agree. You can't give Pogba any defensive responsibility. He needs two hard workers in behind him and has to be operating in the opponents half most of the time.

From the options we have, this might be the safest - even, and I say this hesitantly, in games like today’s.

Matic
McTominay Pogba
Rashford Martial James

Matic protecting the back four, McTominay in the “Fletcher” role of box-to-box destroyer, Pogba with more freedom and licence to roam. It’s far from ideal but I don’t know if Pereira is there yet or if Fred ever will be.

WIth our lack of creativity we do need to get Pogba more involved upfield IMO. Matic isn't ideal but he may be better now as we do seem to have a bit more energy about us at least which could compensate for his lack of mobility.

100% agree
I would like better but this is how we can get the best out of what we got. Matic will still have the agility of a wardrobe but at least the other 2 will be in the roles that suit them best

Let’s not forget that Matic did have a good spell when Solskjaer came in. I’m not his biggest fan by any stretch but he might be an option here.
