Making Spurs the second best team in Europe. And they had to beat City, the best team in England.

Nope. All we know is spurs are not as good in europe as liverpool, because they played each other. We also know that Barcelona weren't as good because they got knocked out by liverpool.

We cab presume that Barcelona are better than spurs because the did better when they played. They were just unfortunate to come up against the best team in the semis rather than the final.

Similarly we have no evidence that spurs were better than Munich because they didn't play. All we can say for sure is that both are worse than Liverpool. Although for ranking purposes, a 3-1 loss to liverpool would place munich higher than spurs who had a 2 - 0 loss.

True there is no evidence they are better than Munich because they didn't play them.
But it is also true that we cannot say Liverpool are better than the teams they didn't play. It is perfectly possible had you had to play City you may have lost, I don't say you would, because it is an unknown. Just like Spurs results are unknown against teams they didn't play.
You beat the teams in front of you and won the trophy.
Spurs beat the teams in front of them except you. So they are the second best team in Europe.

Yeah it's fair enough. I was just creating hypothetical arguments because I find it interesting when you deal with unknowns.

You could equally say that Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Porto beat the teams in front of them except us, just like spurs. They just happened to he drawn against us sooner. Obviously this is all just speculation and doesn't actually matter, just interesting to think about.

Both competitions, league and cup, have their own way of determining the "best" team in that competition. Often neither actually determine an objectively best team, just a best team under that arbitrary rules they have adopted. This is why I find cliches like "the table never lies" to be odd. The table might not lie, but all it shows is who is doing the best by what the table measures. If it was decided that clean sheets was the new way to rank the teams in the league then the table would look different, but it still wouldn't "lie".

Neither Spurs or Liverppol should have got out of their groups, they both had an enormous amount of luck. City are head and shoulders above both teams.

Obviously not. We finished one point behind them in the league and won the CL. We're the best in Europe.

Most football matches contain luck. That's like saying City shouldn't have won the league because they had luck in doing so.
