My take on sunday is that the 4-2-3-1 with Lamela as the no 10, did not work against a Newcastle side that were compact and organised at 5-4-1
with midfield very narrow stopping movement from Spurs through the central areas.
Spurs then tried runs on the left and right wings, mainly from KwP and Son. However, getting to the byline, the few times Spurs managed that
there were 3 defenders encircling Kane which meant the wingers had to look for another side pass, as their target was surrounded.
On the other side, the movements from Geordies attacking players made space available between Sissoko and Winks, and enabled their playmaker Christian Atsu, incidentally only came on for
an injured player, had time and freedom to deliver a ball in the gap between Sanchez and Rose. This is the same gap that Villa exploited in the previous game
at Tottenham's ground.
It is clear that to beat Spurs, you play your forward between Sanchez and Rose, in that channel It's like the M4 corridor in there!
No one reads this situation better than Verts and he should be playing instead within this system. He covers well for Rose.
There was also noticeable lack of Spurs presence behind the Newcastle defenders, due to Kane having a subdued game, which gave the Newcastle defenders time on the ball.
In the second half, when Sissoko was played as RB, he and Rose, provided width and Spurs did penetrate the Newcastle defense. But lacking quality in the finishing meant that Spurs
could not find the equaliser.
It is clear that the 4-2-3-1 isn't a system in which Lamela should be the playmaker. Instead Eriksen is the man for that. It would be useful to see if Lo Celso can operate there.
One man who redeemed himself for me is Toby.
So Lamela isn't the answer: he isn't the playmaker we need. Verts must come in, as Sanchez defends well but doesn't read the game as well as Verts.
The intensity in our midfield isn't there specially obvious in the second half when we weren't closing them down like Spurs are renowned for doing exactly this for the past few years.
Spurs have set high standards in finishing in top 4, 5 years in a row and being CL finalists having spent least amount of money!
Now, its the next chapter...Like every chapter, the start is the toughest phase.
What I saw of Lo Celso, even briefly, excites me. He didn't try to hide. He was trying to be inventive and he made that pass for a nailed on penalty that VAR and the slow ref missed.
I am sure had we been given that pen, we would have won the game
But strange decision tbh. Never seen those NOT given. First time for everything.
I think plenty of reasons to be excited. Ndombele should be coming back and Lo Celso is already exhibiting serious attacking qualities in my view.
Roll-on the NLD!
Sorry for the ramblings..
Lamela isn't your answer, Poch.

Some very silly fans on here seem to think that VAR has some God-like AI technology that "makes decisions".
Nothing could be further from the truth.
VAR is a video of the match, pure and simple.
Just like you can see on your TV.
It is an Assistant to the referee.
There is someone who is looking at it.
He is an assistant to the match referee.
The match referee has final say, and all decisions are his.
Thats all I am going to say on this matter.
And the silly little buggggers who continue to believe otherwise will just have to go on with their misconceptions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're just wrong. Like objectively so, and despite it being explained to you why you are wrong you've just decided to double down. Fair enough if that's what you want to do - a bit weird but whatever, just means there's no point In me continuing to explain why you're wrong since you're less interested in being correct and more interested in feeling clever
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have explained nothing.
You call some hearsay from Neville and and Carragher as FA rule?
You cannot be serious.
Go find something official to back your silly belief.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I ask again, do you honestly believe that professional pundits went on television and lied about what they were told by premier league referees?

Go find an official FA rule to back up your understanding of what you think was said!

No I didn't you condescending twaaat
I can't find a rule because it's not a rule - they've not banned refs from looking at the video replay. They've made a conscious decision to not do so though because they're worried about slowing the game down.

Well now .... just think about that.
And then look back at what I've been saying.

I've been saying that despite them being allowed to do so, they are going to do everything to avoid telling the referee to look at the VAR replay and instead either stick with the on field decision or overrule the referee

Who cares about VAR, Spurs should not have to rely on that to get a draw out of Newcastle at home. The whole team and manager are shot, and big changes are needed. this nonsense on the pitch has been going on for months.

I don't think anybody disagrees with you Sandy.
We are just trying to establish why VAR didn't help with a very obvious pen decision?

I cannot disagree, but I only saw it once in real time, so cannot really comment on it one way or the other. My point is we cannot be hanging our hat on one VAR decision. Playing against teams like Newcastle at home should be a routine home win, and if it isn`t, you know we have big, big problems.

Yes, too many on here are getting hung up on our defence (which hasn't been great) and forgetting that we should be scoring at least 3 at home to a Steve Bruce team. Norwich managed it!
