Dier

I know he's had a shocking last 12 months what with loss of form, injury, illness, WC hangover etc but I wonder if he might be the key to what Poch is planning going forward given our transfer bizz this summer. This is all working on the assumption that Eriksen is sold this week and the fact that while both NDombele & GLC while being regarded as attacking/ Box to Box midfielders (neither would be classed as a pure DM)

If the LT FB options are KWP/Foyth & Sessegnon.... all are good players but none great defensively... Having Dier in the team enables us to go back to having him drop in to make 3 CBs when the FBs attack

GLC & Ndombele are massive upgrades on Winks & Sissoko and in Dombele a decent physical presence to help with the defensive side

Leadership....we seem a bit light in this area & ex Kane (assuming Jan & Toby might not be around much longer we kinda need someone who can roll their sleeves and shake this team out of its funk... he also comes with lots of big game experience

Perhaps this is the year the Dele-Dier Bramance gets back on track..... Seems odd that they both lost form/fitness at the exact same time

Im not saying he's the greatest player out there, but when fit I think he brings a lot to the team that aint flashy but often seems to make the game easier for others. Just hope we don't give up on him too soon...... The likes of Lamela & Sissiko have been far worse & given plenty of chances

Whatever folk think of him when he was playing regularly we were alot better than we are now.

I do agree with this actually. He was excellent before his form dipped and was vital to our game. I don't think he's become a bad player, just injuries and being in and out of the side have caused rustiness.

I'd like to see him back as our DM.

Just think at the moment there are too many issues and questions marks. The whole team and club just seem in a bit of a mess.

i do believe the defence are lacking protection but Dier seems to think he's iniesta now

433 and the midfield need to do a lot lot more defensively and offensively. Get rid of players that deceive and hide from the ball like Sissoko.

Dier is a average footballer and needs better players around him to do the meaty stuff. When Dembele was around they both worked well together and Dembele was our Metronome that was able to knit things together allowing us to keep possession. Dier played it simple and was effective.
However, last season when we were riddled with injuries and needed players like Dele and Dier to step up and take more responsibility and do more with the ball made you soon realised they were not up to the task. Dier is just as poor playing for England.

Why do we always blame injuries and loss of form for certain players playing badly?

The best teams in the world simply have players who can do more with the ball. Can you imagine players like Dier, Sissoko and Dele in Man City's squad. They wont last 5 minutes with Guardiola obsession for keeping possession and use of the ball..
Thats why teams like City and the top teams win titles and we dont.

Dier is not good enough on the ball to play in midfield. He can’t dictate games and even his challenges leave a lot to be desired.

No coincidence he hasn’t been a mainstay and progressed over the last 2 seasons

Squad player at best. If he plays right back against arsenal as some have suggested as a only option we are in trouble

Dier only works in a very limited, purely defensive midfield. And that role only fits in a system with very offensive, quick full backs, because otherwise the midfielders are needed for more than pure defending.

I'm not sure the full backs at the club currently are attacking or quick enough for Dier to have a role, so he'll either have to convert back to centre half (which, to be honest, is probably his best option either way) or fack off out of the club.
