Like many others I still have major doubts whether Ole is the right man for the job but what’s he has done is weed out the deadwood better than our last 3 managers.
Fellaini gone
Lukaku gone
Sanchez gone
Valencia gone
Smalling gone
Darmian looking likely to go
Matic dropped
Young dropped
Jones dropped from squad
Rojo dropped from squad
He hasn’t replaced some of those efficiently yet but least he’s getting rid of the unneeded.
I’m sure he’ll fix the other issues over the next 2 windows if given time.
Ole and the deadwood

Just checked and Herrera started only 17 league games in LVGs second season
Was on the bench a lot of the time. Strange how managers just never seemed to give Herrera long runs in the side - even after good performances

I don’t buy that narrative about Pogba.
Either way both made bad signings and weren’t good enough coaches either. But the club’s transfer policy is bad regardless of coach, as we are seeing with Ole as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Imagine us starting 2016/2017 with a CM of Bastian and Rooney
--------------
Would have been better than Fred and Matic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t think that midfield would have happened though as we had Pogba. Whereas Bastian and Rooney were a lot more realistic - and as Darren says it would have been given the cherry on top by being joined by another failure in Morgan too
-----------
Don't really recall Morgan and Bastian playing together much? Herrera was of course in the mix.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Morgan and Bastian played loads of times together in LVGs second season. Not sure Herrera was favoured by him much after his first season
-------
Not as many as you might think. Bastian only started 21 games for us. 6 of those were in the CL, in which Morgan only started 3 that year. So that's a maximum of 18 and more likely less, but can't be bothered checking.

Yes it was weird. Still can't believe Jose replaced him in DM with Matic after the season he'd had there. Big mistake that he refused to put right.

To be fair the best midfield we’ve had since SAF left for me was Pogba, Matic and Herrera in Jose’s second season. Had a bit of everything but then Matic’s form nosedived in the second half of that season and never recovered

It was better with old man Carrick instead of Matic.

Wonder how Carrick at his peak would have done alongside Pogba and Herrera
Sure would have beaten him with Cleverley or Anderson 😂

Doubt it, we had Fergie managing us when that was the case.

Would have done OK them 3 Robb if Pogba was furthest forward. Wouldn't have needed to do much defensively

OGS quotes on transfer business this week:
news that Chris Smalling is off to Rome
"It's just come up the last couple of days, this opportunity for Chris," said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"With six fit centre-backs I couldn't guarantee Chris first-team football. There are not many English players who have had chance to play in Italy. Hopefully he comes back better for it."
"I can see maybe Matteo (leaving).
"There has been some interest in Matteo [Darmian] over in Italy, wanting to go back home.
"Marcos [Rojo], he's staying definitely. We've got a squad now that's less in numbers, but still big enough and strong enough to have coverage in all positions."
asked about the possibility of Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning to the club. Seriously?
"Well, if he was 28 and not 38 next month it's a big difference. But Zlatan has had a great time here and of course he's still doing well. He was just unfortunate that he got his injury when he got it here.
"He never rented my house but he was looking at it and we can speak a native language. If he's serious, I'll always speak to Zlatan.
Asked on whether he'd seriously consider him coming back: "I don't think that'll happen, no"
Alexis Sanchez's loan move to Inter Milan:
He said: "I think Alexis needed to go.
"At the moment we know he has been here for 18 months and it's not really worked out for him.
"For him as well to restart and get himself playing regularly, getting himself scoring goals, that loan will only benefit everyone in the end.
"We're going to watch every weekend now to see Romelu (Lukaku) and Alexis playing together. We had a decision to make and I'm trusting Anthony [Martial], Marcus [Rashford] and Mason [Greenwood] to be our centre forwards."

On paper it should have been but did we actually play it that often? Funnily enough, it was that trio that looked decent under Ole at first.
I don’t remember Herrera playing as much in Mourinho’s second season. As for Van Gaal’s second season - Herrera was shocking in some of his appearances. Seemed to thrive off a run in the team, understandably.
