Bruno Fernandes

2 goals and 4 assists in his opening 4 league games this season.

Really think we should have gambled on him.

VC lectures others about their supposed agendas and how people just wanna say I told you so but he’s always the first to pipe up with his ‘I told you so’ himself

Very petty man.

Berba, agree with all of that.

On Rashford I think his status in the footballing world is higher than his actual level as a footballer. And this is seen in the way he does those things you state. His development hasn’t been good since his breakthrough due to Mourinho’s flaws here and the gradual decline of the squad as seen him ending up as one of the senior bloody players in attack at the age of 21. So you’ve got a player with the ego of a top forward in a 21 year old footballer that still needs development.

I’ve some sympathy for him having to play in such a dysfunctional, insipid and uninspiring Manchester United team. But he doesn’t help himself with a lot of the decisions he’s makes when he’s on the pitch, decisions he shouldn’t be making despite his age as he’s an incredibly experienced 21 year old.

Yes agree completely. He needs an experienced mentor on the pitch in my view to just keep having a constructive but ultimately encouraging word with him throughout games - he clearly needs some direction and management on the field.

On what you said about Mourinho... I think it goes under the radar but for me the biggest victim of Mourinho's approach to nurturing talent was Pereira. If you recall, he was being groomed as a deep playmaker and played the role really, really well in preseason last summer. He'd shown in Spain, the academy and fleeting appearances in the first team, his technical ability, skill and a bit of flair and energy in more attacking roles so it was interesting to see this developed differently. He then had a cracking first game of the season against Leicester and looked the business; taking the ball from the defence, playing it through the lines and looking to get things going. He then got subbed off at half time the following game - he wasn't the worst on the pitch - and was all but never seen again until Ole arrived and gradually reintroduced him, with mixed results in differing roles.

He now looks like a player that doesn't have a position on the pitch anymore, and isn't showing any of the qualities on the ball that he was known for. At the moment he looks like he's trying to be some sort of hatchet man - a Herrera-lite if you like - but is struggling. He's definitely having a crisis of identity and confidence, which I really think can be traced back to Mourinho dumping him out of the first team squad almost completely despite showing real promise. I'm not saying he'd have been top quality or anything - we don't know - but I feel he'd be showing a lot more by now if he were shown some faith and patience in that role (or a more central attacking one).

If that came off as if I was the only person seeing this that wasn't my intent.

I dunno, I’ve never really been impressed by Periera at senior level. He just doesn’t do much. It was the same in Spain from what I saw and read about him, so it’s difficult to lay too much blame on Mourinho. I just don’t think he’s a particularly assertive character, and that shows in his game, as he has good technical ability but doesn’t do much with it.

Someone once posted a link of a game he had in Spain (Grenada, I think) showing about ten minutes of his highlights.

None of it amounted to a goal being scored or a goal assist. Everything resulted in nothingness.

Sounds about right. Though I’m not even that bothered about his goal contribution. It’s his lack of impact on moving the game forward into the danger areas that bother me. It’s not like he doesn’t have the ability to receive it and progress forward with a dribble or a pass. He’s just so timid.

“Conviction” is the word that comes to mind when I watch Pereira. He lacks conviction. There was a moment in the first half at Saints where someone teed him up on the edge of the box. He was happy to take a side-foot shot even though the defender, who’d had to commit, was clear favourite to block it. A cannier or more ruthless player might have (I’m not advocating diving) tried to draw the foul. That might be harsh - I only saw that incident once but that’s how I saw it. When he did actually go in the front foot against Chelsea, he beat a man and whipped in a cross and Martial scored the clincher.

Yeah I’d agree with that as well. Maybe it’s just me but I usually associate the word conviction with a player’s impact in the final third, and as I’ve mentioned it’s not even my issue with him.

To take an extreme example, but Iniesta actually lacked conviction in the final third. His lack of goal contribution in his career in comparison with the best around is an example of that. However, everything else he did, particularly his ability to transition the attacks for Barca and Spain made him an unbelievably valuable footballer.

If Periera could actually help us in transition without having any conviction I wouldn’t even be that bothered. But he doesn’t do that either. He’s basically a really pointless player.

It is just nothingness with him.
